Gamecocks no longer in the Shrine Bowl; more reaction to Shawn Elliott
Dec. 09, 2016
Shrine Bowl roster updates
A few of the Gamecocks commitments who were picked to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas next week will not play in the game.
On Wednesday, safety Jaylin Dickerson (Pinecrest-Southern Pines) was announced as a departure from the North Carolina team.
Wide receiver OrTre Smith (Mount Pleasant-Wando) has been replaced on the South Carolina squad after suffering an ankle injury at the end of his senior season.
There could be two more.
If Chapin High School beats Hartsville in the South Carolina 4A playoffs, tight end Will Register will be playing for a state championship next Saturday, so he would be out of the Shrine Bowl.
It’s the same story for linebacker Sherrod Greene. Rocky Mount High School is in the North Carolina 3A semifinal, and Greene will be busy next weekend if it beats Havelock.
More on reactions to Elliott
SEC Country has received more feedback from South Carolina offensive line recruits on the departure of Shawn Elliott.
Eric Douglas
“I mean, it sucks, because I was looking forward to playing with him, learning under his craft and seeing what he had to offer me, as a coach. It sucks, but it’s a business and you just got to move on. I’m not committed to a coach. I’m committed to a team. I’m in a relationship with South Carolina, not just coach Elliott, but the whole coaching staff and all that, so I’m just ready to experience something and go down there and make an immediate impact.”
“It’s not really a matter of who comes in and takes the job. I’m pretty sure whoever coach Muschamp hires, the new offensive line coach will have (a lot) of experience as an O-line coach. I’m ready to come in and put some work in under him.”
Jordan Rhodes
“I’m happy for Shawn Elliott, taking the new position as the head coach at Georgia State, and I would love to see Georgia State win a Sun Belt championship.”
Warren McClendon
“Wow, I had no idea about coach Elliott leaving and it has a little effect on what I think about South Carolina.”
Maxwell Iyama
“I feel the same way because I never met him to build a relationship.”
New offer out
South Carolina offered 2018 tight end Jacob Warren on Thursday afternoon. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound prospect attends Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn.
Tennessee also offered Warren on Thursday. Earlier this fall, he saw the two teams play each other in Williams-Brice Stadium.

On Thursday, ESPN released its list of top 2017 junior college prospects. Included on that list were several notable names:
9 – Stephen Guidry — Hinds C.C.
The former South Carolina wide receiver commitment also was once committed to LSU. However, the Gamecocks are no longer involved.
10 – Keisean Nixon — Arizona Western College
A native of Compton, Calif., Nixon has taken official visits to South Carolina and Oregon State. Tennessee will have him on campus this weekend.
Nixon, a defensive back, will announce his decision on Dec. 15, his mother’s birthday.
15 – Javon Kinlaw — Jones County J.C.
South Carolina placed Kinlaw at Jones County after he finished at Goose Creek (S.C.) High School last December. The one-time defensive tackle commitment is considering several schools with South Carolina, including Alabama, Maryland and Texas A&M.
18 – Dennis Daley — Georgia Military College
The Ridge View High School (Columbia, S.C.) product has been firm with his commitment to South Carolina since he was placed at the junior college. Daley plans to enroll at South Carolina in the summer.
