Gamecocks offer son of former NFL WR Joe Horn  & other recruiting news

Feb. 15, 2017

Joe Horn spent 12 seasons in the NFL, playing wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.

As a standout at Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville, N.C., Horn’s first scholarship offer came from South Carolina, followed by Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina. But grades forced him to take the junior college route.

Almost 30 years later, his son, Jaycee, received his own offer to play for South Carolina. The younger Horn, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback, has offers from Duke, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, N.C. State, Ole Miss, Syracuse and Tennessee.

South Carolina wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon passed along the word on Monday night.

“(McClendon) let me know a couple of good things about South Carolina. … I just can’t wait to visit,” Jaycee said.

He added, “I heard they have a crazy atmosphere on game day and I heard the city is a nice place. I’ve heard nothing but good things about South Carolina from a lot of people.”

Georgia Tech and Wake Forest have hosted him for visits so far this year. Later this spring, he hopes to visit Duke, Ole Miss and “most of the schools” that have already offered.

Jaycee, who didn’t play varsity for Alpharetta (Ga.) High School until this past fall, will consider several factors as he continues through the recruiting process.

“Probably, just the comfortability with the coaches, the relationship with them and just my feel for the school, if I like it when I visit, if I like it and have a good feel for it, and education,” he said.

As a junior, Jaycee had 25 pass breakups and 7 interceptions.

Visit plans for Dakereon Joyner

Four-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner has more visits lined up. According to Carson Mason of sportstalksc.com, Joyner will visit N.C. State this weekend.

South Carolina, which recently hosted him for an earlier junior day event, will have him back on campus. Georgia also is in line for a visit.

All three schools, along with Louisville and Virginia Tech, have been listed in Joyner’s lead group.

South Carolina high school coaching news

Jeff Herron, who spent this past season as the head coach at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., has been named the head coach at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson.

At Grayson, Herron was the head coach of South Carolina signee Jamyest Williams, among several other Power 5 prospects.

Herron takes over at Hanna, where there are a number of Power 5 prospects, including 4-star defensive end Zacch Pickens, a 2019 prospect.

Brian Smith is on the move from C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville. On Tuesday night, he posted news that he would be the next head coach at Blythewood.

Xavier Thomas tweet of the day

This one didn’t actually come from the man himself, but from 4-star defensive tackle T.K. Chimedza, one of his teammates at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. But it has since been deleted.

Chimedza wrote that Thomas couldn’t stop talking about playing at South Carolina.

Both prospects visited Clemson a couple of weeks ago for the Tigers’ junior day event. Thomas, a 5-star defensive end, is expected to attend one of the two schools from his home state of South Carolina.

That's cool, I had no idea that Joe Horn wanted to come to South Carolina!
