Gamecocks official visit weekend features top defensive targets

June 01, 2018

Several potential additions to the 2019 South Carolina recruiting class will be on campus this weekend for official visits.

The group, which is highlighted by a handful of 4-star defenders, arrives just days after several members of the 2018 signing class reported to campus. Multiple outlets have reported that 5-star defensive tackle Travon Walker is set to be among the guests this weekend.

Walker, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 25 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, is from Upson-Lee High School in Thomaston, Ga. Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are also in the mix.

Two more non-committed defensive linemen are visiting: 4-star end Savion Jackson and 4-star end Joseph Anderson. Both are trending towards the Gamecocks on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Jackson (Clayton, N.C.) is a more recent Gamecocks lean, according to the Crystal Ball. Anderson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) once indicated to SEC Country South Carolina was one of his “top” options with Notre Dame, which helped kick-start the perception that his leader resides in the SEC East.

South Carolina could be the team to beat for two of the 3-stars visiting this weekend: Derek Boykins and Jammie Robinson.

Boykins, a linebacker from Concord, N.C., was born in Beaufort, S.C. and grew up rooting for the Gamecocks. He’s set to take an official visit to Kentucky next weekend. An unofficial camp stop at Clemson has also been arranged for this month.

Robinson is classified as an athlete, but he’s on board the for defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, to potentially suit up in the Gamecocks’ secondary. Robinson, who recently released a top six that includes Georgia and Auburn, has taken several visits to South Carolina this year. The Dawgs could be the primary competition.

Junior college tackle Anthony Whigan will make the trip down from Lackawanna Community College in Pennsylvania.

According to a recent interview with Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC, Whigan is planning to take an official visit to Louisville in June. Ole Miss and Penn State could host him in December. Maryland, where he’s originally from, is in the mix, too.

Five-star defensive end Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.) and 3-star linebacker Jahmar Brown (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), both of whom committed last week, are also expected to take their official visits this weekend to South Carolina.
