Gamecocks prepare for busy recruiting week

Official visit weekend
South Carolina is scheduled to host 3-star cornerback Keisean Nixon for an official visit this weekend. The No. 7 ranked JUCO cornerback in the Class of 2017 already has taken official visits to Colorado State and Iowa State. Missouri will host him later this month.
Offensive tackle Summie Carlay and wide receiver OrTre Smith, both of whom are committed to the Gamecocks as mid-year enrollees, won’t take their official visits until next month.
Playoff brackets set
Now that everyone is up to speed, it’s time for the South Carolina High School League state playoffs, and several future Gamecocks are vying for a shot to play in Williams-Brice Stadium next month.
In the 5A bracket, which culminates on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. ET, Carlay will match up with linebacker Davonne Bowen on Friday night when Laurens hosts Woodmont. The only other Gamecock commitment whose team is in the 5A hunt is Smith, who’s sidelined after having ankle surgery.
Among 2018 targets, Fort Dorchester quarterback Dakereon Joyner is potentially set up for a second-round game against Blythewood, which features Jordyn Adams at quarterback, though he’ll play wide receiver in college.
The 4A tournament could feature a second-round showdown between quarterback Jay Urich and wide receiver Shi Smith. Urich leads Wren into a tough opener against Ridge View. Smith’s Union County squad will host Aiken in the first round.
Chapin, along with tight end Will Register, will host 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas and the Wilson Tigers.
The 4A title game is on Saturday, Dec. 17 at noon. Also scheduled for that afternoon is the 3A game, which is set for 3 p.m. The 2A and 1A games will be played the night before at Benedict College.
Calbert trending towards Tennessee
Not that it comes as any surprise, but 3-star offensive tackle K’Rojhn Calbert is trending in the direction of Tennessee, the in-state school, which offered days before he took an official visit to South Carolina.
