Gamecocks prepare for final official visit weekend

The official visitors
The final official visit weekend is upon us and the South Carolina coaching staff will play host to several of the remaining 2017 targets.
Four-star defensive end Robert Beal, who played his senior season at IMG Academy, postponed his visit to this weekend after coming down with the flu last week. The No. 8-ranked weak-side defensive end is committed to Georgia.
Three-star safety commitment Zay Brown, who took an official visit to Arkansas State last weekend, is also scheduled to be on campus. Brown (Athens, Ga.) is the No. 102-ranked safety in the Class of 2017.
Three-star offensive tackle Jordon Carty (Hollywood, Fla.) has already taken official visits to Mississippi State and Oregon State. The Gamecocks are the favorite, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
Four-star defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw will go on his second USC official visit. Earlier this month, he was in Los Angeles, visiting with the Trojans. The former South Carolina commitment is slated to announce his decision on Jan. 31, via Twitter.
Three-star defensive end Aaron Sterling (Tucker, Ga.), a former Alabama commitment is down to South Carolina and Tennessee. He’ll be in town this weekend.
Four-star cornerback Jamyest Williams, a Gamecock commitment since August, is set to make his grand return to Columbia. This trip comes on the heels of his visit to Georgia last weekend. Williams (Loganville, Ga.) will announce his decision on signing day.
Brad Johnson’s timeline
According to Pendleton (S.C.) High School coach Paul Sutherland, who spoke with Phil Kornblut, 4-star defensive end Brad Johnson continues to go back and forth between South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
“He likes both schools so much and he’s going to try to make up his mind by the weekend, but it may go down to signing day,” Sutherland said. “Neither one of us ever dreamed or planned it would be this way.”
Johnson visited with coaches from South Carolina and Virginia Tech on Wednesday night.
“He’s got everything in front of him and it’s up to him,” Sutherland said. “I want to stress this is not anything for drama. He legitimately does not know where he’s going at this point.”
Thursday’s activity
South Carolina sent out a couple of offers on Thursday, one of which went to a 2018 quarterback from California.
Re-al Mitchell, a 3-star prospect from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif., also lists offers from Arizona, Utah, Fresno State and Northwestern.
South Carolina offensive coordinator Kurt Roper passed along word to Mitchell’s offensive coordinator, Chad Johnson (not Ochocinco).
Mitchell has a “tremendous amount” of interest in the Gamecocks.
“It’d definitely be a school I’ll be considering visiting in the spring or summer,” he said.
Muschamp ventured south to Florida, stopping at IMG Academy in Bradenton. Among the prospects down there are 2018 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas and 2018 4-star defensive end Stephon Wynn, both of whom are originally from the state of South Carolina.
Thomas and Wynn are both scheduled to head back to the Palmetto State this weekend, to attend Clemson’s junior day event.
