If Channing Tindall’s heart is where his home is, Will Muschamp is going to be one happy fella.
Tindall, a 4-star linebacker from Columbia Spring Valley High School, which is about a 30-minute ride from Williams-Brice Stadium, is among the priority recruits in the Class of 2018 for Muschamp and the Gamecocks staff.
“This is home for me,” Tindall said. “I’ve been going to games here since I was a little kid. My mother graduated from USC, so it’s kind of like tradition.”
Several rival SEC programs are also vying for his commitment, including Auburn, Florida and Georgia. This weekend, he’ll visit Florida and Florida State.
“I haven’t been to Florida State yet, so I’m just trying to see everything about Florida State. But Florida, I’m going to the Friday Night Lights,” Tindall said. “I’m still trying to get that 1-on-1 with the coaches, to see who I best fit with, coaching-wise.”
Georgia hosted Tindall for a camp workout last Saturday. On Sunday, after stopping by South Carolina’s indoor facility for a non-recruiting event, he was expected to go meet with the coaches before heading back to the northeast side of town.
Auburn’s recruiting efforts are being headed up by assistant coach Travis Williams, a former Spring Valley linebacker who played for the Tigers.
At various points in Tindall’s recruitment, the Dawgs and Tigers have been considered the biggest threats to the Gamecocks. Even though South Carolina has been named the leader, Tindall isn’t ready to make a commitment.
The goal is to have a decision in place before the end of September. In the meantime, several factors will be considered.
“First, I look at the coaching staff,” Tindall said. “Then, once I look at the coaching staff, I look at the environment. Is that where I really want to live? It’s not just a 4-year decision, it’s a 40-year decision.
“Then I look at academics. I want to major in medical kinesiology. Just see how that would fit for me in college.”
