Gamecocks set to host highly touted JUCO OL

April 29, 2018

Anthony Whigan, the No. 2-ranked junior college tackle in the country, plans to make his first South Carolina recruiting visit in June.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman from Lackawanna Community College will be among the handful of official visitors for what’s shaping up to be a big weekend for the Gamecocks.

“I know they’re a good program and they’ve got a new coaching staff,” Whigan said. “They won a bowl game last year. They’re one of the schools that’s got a sports management degree and that’s what I plan on majoring in.”

Offensive line coach Eric Wolford has already made a strong impression, even though Whigan was offered just a few weeks ago.

“He’s getting guys out of that school into the NFL,” Whigan said. “He coached in the NFL for a while. He’s a straight-up dude. He doesn’t lie to you and I like the way he coaches.”

Whigan, who’s originally from Great Mills High School in Maryland, is also planning to take an official visit to Penn State. Maryland rounds out his list of top schools.

“They’re not too far from home,” he said of the Terps. “It’s like 45 minutes. Their program is on the rise. I think they’re doing a lot of good things there. I just like it there.”

There’s a “real good connection” between Penn State and Lackawanna.

“And they get guys [to the NFL] as well,” Whigan said. “I like the fans and atmosphere there.”

His commitment timeline is set for later this year, either during his sophomore season or shortly thereafter. Several factors will be considered over the next few months.

“Just somewhere I feel comfortable at, somewhere I can succeed, on and off the field,” Whigan said. “Just somewhere my parents can come and see the games, that’s not too far away [from home].”

According to 247Sports, Whigan is the No. 6 overall JUCO prospect in the country
