Gamecocks take down Troy 23-14, how did the South Carolina perform vs. Troy?

OCT. 02, 2021

Here’s a look at what where the Positives and what was the Negatives  the Gamecocks’ 23-14 win Saturday vs. Troy (ARTICLE)

Luke Doty.  I listened to the game on the radio.  At one point Tommy pointed out that Doty's passes have a mainly flat trajectory because of the power in his arm.  Bentley, Hilinski, and Collyn Hill all had distance and the right amount of arc to drop their passes into the end zone.  Not sure how this will impact us, but it's something I have never thought about until I heard it mentioned yesterday.

Damani Staley.  Although Brown's miscue at the end zone at the end is receiving all the attention right now, this was the second fumble recovery that Staley has lost possession of this season.  You could just say fall on the damn ball like you're supposed to, but I believe our defense is keenly aware of our offense's scoring difficulties and that may have something to do with it.  However, I will say, "Just fall on the damned ball next time. "  LOL

Defensive TDs.  Our defense has scored 3 TDs so far this season.  That's great.  Unfortunately our offense has only scored 9 TDs: 8 passing, 1 rushing.  Only 4 total TDs in the last four games. though.

Home attendance.  Official attendance for the Troy game was 60,686.  That's a really good number considering everything, including Covid, that's going on right now.

I was at the Citadel game yesterday so have not had a chance to watch yesterday’s game yet.  I will say last week on the roll-out pass into the end zone, Doty put the perfect touch on that pass and placed it perfectly.  I will watch today to see if I notice what Tommy is talking about.

I expect with more coaching, practice, and game time that Doty will improve.  Probably not as quickly as we want but he should.   Some of the penalties are inexcusable, mostly the ones on the OL.   Those shouldn’t still be an issue at this point but for some reason they still are.   Don’t know if it’s coaching style, lack of attention to detail, focus, or talent.  Probably some of all that.   Defensive turnovers are a pleasant surprise to this season so far.   Defense is definitely doing enough for us to be successful.

Question for the board. Are the offensive coaches in over their heads? Is the talent on SEC defenses too much for their coaching talent?

Just a couple of questions.

1st year coaching staff taking over a team that won 2 games last year.  4 games in. Way too early to make any definitive statements here.   Saw you mention making a change in another thread.   Seems premature to me.

Offense is a mess. Not yet to me on the staff, lets play it out. who knows what to expect. Lack of talent etc etc. Clemson offense is a little better but look at their issues. Same coaches just different players.

Maybe a case of some of the players in over their head ie talent.  We have been working on these schemes since the spring.  Dropped passes continue to plague us.   Probably need at least 2-3 years with these coaches, let's see how they recruit.  Going to need improvements starting this weekend and that  includes penalties if we want to see a win.

All we need are a couple of receivers like A. Jeffries and Sterling sharp, we would be much improved.

The biggest problem for South Carolina football, we don't have the Jimmie and Joe's  to play the X'S  and O'S.  Say all you want about the coaches but hey the talent is not there .  The scheme could be too much for the O line.  and it  just might be an little of coaching here and there.  With that said Tennessee will roll will win by 21 at least .

Hey, you kidding me we need an whole new offensive line, of 5

Yes, every  year let's play it out, how about getting some talent in Columbia for the O line, like 5 star kids who want to start right away . The coaches  are o.k.  if you don't have the talent it will not work.
