Gamecocks & Tar Heels ready for Super Regional showdown (AUDIO)

It rained most of the day Thursday in Chapel Hill and the forecast is for more of the same Friday, but that hasn’t dampened the spirits of the USC and North Carolina baseball teams as they prepare for the Super Regional scheduled to start Friday at 1:00 PM at Boshamer Stadium on ESPN2.

Both teams took batting practice under the stadium in the indoor cages. Neither got the chance to work on the field which was covered with the tarp all day.

USC reliever Forrest Koumas is out for the regional after having a pin removed from his pitching elbow, otherwise the Gamecocks are in good health and all of the regulars and frontline pitchers are ready to go.

The Gamecocks will start lefthander Nolan Belcher (7-5, 2.25) in game one and lefty Jordan Montgomery (5-1, 1.67) in game two. If he’s not used in relief in the first two games, freshman lefthander Jack Wynkoop (7-3, 2.92) would start in a third game.

The Tar Heels will start lefthander Hobbs Johnson (4-0, 2.09) in game one if it’s played Friday. If the opener is pushed back to Saturday, the Tar Heels will start lefty Kent Emanuel (11-3, 2.70) with Johnson going in game two Sunday. Their third starter would be righthander Benton Moss (8-1, 3.78).

USC and UNC are tied for the most NCAA postseason wins since 2006 with 45 each. This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2007 Super Regional won by UNC in three games in Chapel Hill. USC has won 8 of 12 postseason meetings with the Tar Heels.

As for the weather, here’s tomorrow’s forecast from TheWeatherChannel.com.

Heavy rain early… then remaining cloudy with showers and a thunderstorm or two in the afternoon. High 74F. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 mph. 1 to 2 inches of rain expected.
