USC signed a class of 24 on Wednesday and it’s possible the Gamecocks could add another player or two a few months down the road. They plan to watch the academic progress of WR Jeriko Morris of Crystal Springs, MS and RB Tyren Jones of Hutchinson JC, KS.
Morris Wednesday signed with Jones JC, MS with the understanding, according to his coach, that USC will hold a spot for him for 2016 if he qualifies by the summer or two years down the road if he successfully completes junior college work.
“He did not have a signable offer from South Carolina because he was not qualified,” said Crystal Springs coach Stephen Rice. “If he gets qualified tomorrow or the end of the school year he will have a signable offer. Coach McClendon told me that whenever he gets ready to come to South Carolina he’ll have an offer. They are looking at the long run. They can say hey, two years ago we were the only SEC club to show you love. Ultimately they want him on their campus. Coach Muschamp told his parents the same thing.”
Rice said Louisiana Tech also has called with the same message. He said Morris will take the ACT this Saturday and that will tell the story of his qualifying chances for this year.
“With a jump, he’ll have a chance to make it.” he said.
Jones committed to USC last month after his official visit knowing he wasn’t going to be in a position academically to sign Wednesday. But he failed to follow the plan designed by USC to get him in a position to qualify for enrollment and the Gamecocks basically washed their hands of him.
The door to USC hasn’t been completely shut on Jones who could get another look later in the year if he can get academically qualified, which at this point appears to be a long shot.
