Gamecocks weekend recruiting notesDec. 11, 2016
Georgia’s champsThe final high school football state championship in the Georgia Dome was a classic. In the 7A title game, Grayson (Loganville) knocked off Roswell in a 23-20 overtime thriller.
Several South Carolina recruits were on the field for Grayson, including cornerbackcommitment Jamyest Williams, who flashed ability as a punt returner. Given the Gamecocks struggles in that department this season, there’s reason to believe he’ll be asked to field the first punt by N.C. State in Bank of America Stadium to start the 2017 season.
Williams took an official visit to Oklahoma last weekend, and it remains to be seen where else he’ll visit in January. One would assume that one of those four remaining officials will be to South Carolina.
Two of his teammates are considering official with the Gamecocks: 4-star safety Deangelo Gibbs and 4-star offensive tackle Tony Gray.
The in-state Dawgs continue to press for both, but the Gamecocks still have a shot.
Notes from the CarolinasSouth Carolina linebacker commitment Sherrod Greene has moved on to the North Carolina 3A championship with Rocky Mount High School, which means he won’t be able to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas this week.
With Chapin’s loss to Hartsville in the South Carolina 4A semifinals, Gamecocks tight end commitment Will Register is freed up to play in the Shrine Bowl.
Three state championship games will be played at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday:
12 – South Pointe vs. Hartsville 4A
Several South Pointe players have been offered by South Carolina, including 2018 athlete/wide receiver Derion Kendrick, 2018 defensive end/linebacker Eli Adams and 2018 cornerback Steven Gilmore Jr. Kicker B.T. Potter, a 2018 prospect, is on the Gamecocks offer radar.
3 – Chapman vs. Dillon 3A
Dillon quarterback Brayden Hawkins has not been offered by South Carolina, but he’s visited the campus several times this year, including a couple of games.
6:30 – Boiling Springs vs. Dutch Fork 5A
For Boiling Springs, there’s safety Najee Thompson, who visited South Carolina earlier this season.
Recruiting roundupThere’s some new footage of South Carolina basketball commitment Ibrahim Doumbia floating around the web. It’s certainly worth a look.
The 3-star prospect from Miami shows off some versatility, knocking down shots from the outside and finishing strong around the rim. Gamecocks coach Frank Martin recently likened him to sophomore forward Chris Silva.
Dakereon Joyner, another 2018 South Carolina target from the Lowcountry, had a strong junior campaign. The 4-star quarterback put up some impressive numbers for Fort Dorchester, which fell to Dutch Fork in the 5A semifinals.
