Gamecocks well-represented in Shrine Bowl

ROEBUCK, S.C. — Shrine Bowl practices are off and running and there’s no shortage of South Carolina commitments and recruits getting ready for Saturday’s all-star game between the best prospects from the Carolinas.
SEC Country has the latest on a handful of the game’s top participants.
The latest on Johnson
Pendleton (S.C.) High School 3-star Brad Johnson is among the top overall players on the South Carolina team for this week’s Shrine Bowl.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound prospect just took an official visit to Virginia Tech over the weekend. In January, he’ll take an official visit to South Carolina, then Tennessee. A decision will be reached shortly after his trip to Knoxville, which is the weekend of the 20th.
South Carolina’s staff continues to press hard for Johnson, who’s the No. 22-ranked weak-side defensive end in the country.
“I’ve been talking to coach (Coleman) Hutzler, coach (Will) Muschamp, (Travaris Robinson), Mike Peterson, they’ve all been keeping in contact with me,” Johnson said.
The Gamecocks like Johnson as a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end, which is why he hears from Hutzler, the linebackers coach, and Peterson, who coaches the “Buck” position.
“They’re just letting me know that I’m still on their mind, they still want me and nothing’s changed with me,” Johnson said. “Basically, they can’t wait until I get back up there on the 13th, and I can’t either.”
This week, Johnson is roommates with South Carolina commitment Davonne Bowen.

South Carolina’s standing with T.J. Moore is up in the air. The 4-star tackle from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C., who was once committed to the Gamecocks, is waiting to see who replaces former offensive line coach Shawn Elliott.
Until then, Moore told reporters that he was planning to hold off on making a decision about where the Gamecocks stand.
“I’m going to be honest, I don’t feel the same way I did about them since coach Elliott left,” Moore said. “That was a big factor and a big part in how I felt about South Carolina.
“But they’re still great people and coaches. I wouldn’t say they’re all the way out the picture.”
For the three official visit weekends in January, Moore is scheduled to visit South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. N.C. State is also in the mix.
No more McKethan
It came as a bit of a surprise when North Carolina offensive line commitment Marcus McKethan showed up to South Carolina for a game earlier this fall.
The 3-star offensive tackle from Barnwell (S.C.) High School does “not really” have much contact with the Gamecocks staff, and he’s locked in on his commitment to the Tar Heels.
