Gamecocks won’t name a starting quarterback before season opener

August 21, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Two scrimmages have come and gone for South Carolina in fall camp and no starting quarterback has been named.

During a teleconference Sunday, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said the team will not name a starting quarterback prior to its season opener at Vanderbilt on Sept. 1

“I thought all the quarterbacks looked good (in Saturday’s scrimmage),” Muschamp said. “At this time, we are not ready to name a starter before Vanderbilt.”

As it stands, the Gamecocks still have a three-man quarterback race going between senior Perry Orth and freshmen Brandon McIlwain and Jake Bentley. On Saturday, Muschamp said all three made some good plays and that next weekend, the staff will “certainly narrow it down” on who will start.

“I think that it’s to our advantage going into the first game of keeping things in house,” he said. “If somebody had distanced themselves, we probably would have named a starter.”

No matter who gets the call to start against Vanderbilt, he likely will not be the lone quarterback to play in the opener as Muschamp said there is a possibility of playing two at the position.

“There’s a very strong possibility of that,” he said.
