It seems like desperation coaching these days to me: throw a bad pitcher in Game #1 against their Friday Ace, to hopefully even out the match-ups for the #2 and #3 pitchers, and then have your batters swing early in pitching counts, to try to catch opposing pitchers grooving strike pitches down the heart of the plate to jump on you in the pitch count, and therefore not allow the pitcher to work the count in their favor, which then the batter has to be patient and anticipate their pitch  to hit, but in our case, we're just striking out all the time...
