TIPOFF NOTABLES

  • Lamont Paris, who has been a part of nine NCAA Division I Tournaments and 17 twenty-win seasons as a college head and assistant coach, was named the University of South Carolina’s 33rd head coach by Director of Athletics Ray Tanner on Thursday, March 24, 2022.
  • In 114 previous seasons of basketball at Carolina, the Gamecocks are 84-30 all-time in season openers. Tuesday marks the second time in school history the team has opened the season against SC State. The last matchup in game one between the Gamecocks and Bulldogs came on Nov. 10, 2006, a 55-52 Carolina victory.
  • This new-look Gamecock squad features eight new players (four transfers and four freshman) headlined by standout freshman forward Gregory “GG” Jackson II, the highest rated recruit in program history (recruit rankings started in early 2000s). He joined former Carolina standout PJ Dozier (2015-17) as the only five-star signees in program history.
  • Carolina began the season with an 80-41 exhibition win over Mars Hill on Nov. 2 at CLA. Meechie Johnson led all scorers in the contest with 16 points. Chico Carter Jr. (13), GG Jackson (11) and Zachary Davis (10) all scored in double figures for Carolina. Benjamin-Bosmans Verdonk led the team with 12 rebounds. The Gamecock defense limited the Lions to just 27.9 percent shooting (17-for-61) and 6.3 percent (1-for-16) shooting from behind the arc. Carolina outscored Mars Hill 44-20 in the second half.
  • The Lions were led by first-year head coach Larry Davis, a former Gamecock great (1995-97) and one of the stars on the 1997 SEC Championship squad. His two-year scoring mark of 1,068 points still remains the second most points scored by any two-year player in program history. Davis originally attended North Carolina before transferring to South Carolina and head coach Eddie Fogler.

Started to go to the game, but just too tired from work this afternoon.

Gamecocks got out to a sizable lead midway through the 1st half, but then went cold from the field, and struggled to keep the lead 36-33 at halftime. They then jumped back out to 11 early in the 2nd half, but it's now 56-49. SC State is starting to rack up fouls, though. We've only played 8 players all game long: we are supposed to have 14 on roster this season, but apparently many are injured right now or are not ready to see court time. SC State has played 11 players thus far......

Gamecocks win by the skin of their teeth 80-77, but a win's a win, and the Coach Paris Era starts off with success. The Gamecocks were short on players tonight, and that played a factor in the game, especially after 7-foot Center Josh Gray fouled out in the 2nd half. The biggest hit happened when PG Meechie Johnson went down with a rolled ankle early in the 2nd half. He scored all 9 pts at that point, and had the offense rolling on solid runs until then.

GG Jackson II had a strong debut as a Gamecock, with 18 pts on 7-15 shooting, and 10 rebounds. Not bad for a true freshman in his first collegiate game, and he played 33 minutes and was strong down the stretch in a tight game when the team needed him. The Gamecocks were led by F Hayden Brown with 21 pts on 6-10 shooting (he hit his first 6 attempts) and 9-12 FT shooting, with 5 rebounds: he wasn't initially expected to play a lot of minutes due to dealing with a hamstring coming into the season. G Jacobi Wright added 14 pts on 4-7 shooting, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Jackson is as advertised. He's going to be special!
He looks very natural out there in how he moves. You can definitely tell he has a different level of athleticism. Let's hope he can continue to develop as the season moves on and the other teams start to focus on him defensively.

This is essentially a brand new team with new coaches and players this year.

Any coach probably needs to his guys play loose in the first couple of OOC games to find out what they can really do.

I didn't watch the game. The close score indicates a lack of defense, but maybe this is part of it right. It sounds like the Bulldogs were hot on the perimiter, too.

I might go to the Clemson game Friday night. It should be a great game.

SC State did get hot in the second half. They hit some step-backs that you can't defend well, unless you're 10 feet tall or foul them.

We had spells where the d was really good and spells where they looked a little lost. When State made their runs, we seemed to be late on rotations more often than not. Also had a couple of times where they got open because of a lack of communication on our part. Good thing is that I thought the effort was there and these are some coachable items to work on and improve.

I said it in the chat last night but I don't think we win that game with Frank coaching (I was a big Frank supporter btw) and it was refreshing not to see the coach screaming like a maniac, shouting obscenities and giving players the death stare.

I think State is making an effort to improve its revenue sports, too.

If Coastal, Furman and Wofford can do it, why not State?

No disrespect but those step backs are defended by pushing the man to the basket, to the lane, there is a reason they shot as good from 3 than from 2... The defender has to trust he has weak side help coming when you take away the 3, a few were defended well and they hit difficult shots but we played generic defense and State threw the book at us... We didn't press any, why? We played a 1-3-1 for a moment that worked well but they hit a 3 and we came out of it only for them to drain 3 straight step back 3"s playing man? A win is a win, they all will not all be pretty, CONGRATS COACH PARIS you are undefeated, 1-0, keep it rolling Friday night and beat the brakes off clemson

No disrespect to you, but I disagree on how to defend a step back, but that's a discussion for another day.

Either way, the bigger point I was trying to make is that our problems on defense are coachable and can/will improve over time. The effort and hustle was there, which I feel like we haven't seen consistently in recent seasons.

Wow, so you don't think Bryant, Reese, Couisnard, Wilson.... gave effort or hustled but after watching us win the 1st half by 3 and tie the 2nd half to SC State who has a first-year coach you saw it in this team, not a fan of demeaning one Gamecock to lift up another but agree with the effort and hustle though I never thought effort or hustle was an issue the last several years...
The only way to take away the step back is to push the defender left or right as you stay in his grill, this allows for moves to the basket but takes away the open jumper, it is the MJ pick your poison defense... Push him to his off hand and stay in his grill while knowing you have help, we let number 3 go right all night, we let him have the the step back 3 anytime he wanted it unless GG was guarding him and he took him to the right everytime... We also had a high rate of success when we fed the post but rarely did it, we missed Verdonk last night but Sanford played well.
