DE KJ Henry of Clemmons, NC is less than a week away from his personal D-Day. At roughly 4:20 PM Wednesday at West Forsyth High School, in front of teammates, family, friends, the media and the ESPNU camera, he will rise to tell all his college choice from a final five of Clemson, USC, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Alabama. During a break in Shrine Bowl practice Wednesday he disclosed how he will get to that decision.
“It’s going to be about opportunity and just making sure I have the best chance to be successful on the next level,” Henry said.
He reiterated part of the process will include his father Keith, the running backs coach at Charlotte, and the possibility one of the schools he’s considering will hire him as an assistant coach. To his knowledge, Henry said, none of the five has contacted his father at this point.
“Dad made it very frank that’s his business,” Henry said. “He’s a coach and he’s handling that and he’s not bringing that into my recruiting process. But at the same time, that’s my dad and I’m going to do whatever I can to help us both be successful. If that’s how it works out, that’s how it works out.”
“That will be a little discussion when we get back (home from the Shrine Bowl),” Henry continued. “That’s why I tell people I don’t know where I’m going right now because things like that will come into play. It’s something we’ll definitely talk about when I get back to the house.”
Henry said his recent contact from USC was from outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson, and from Clemson he’s heard recently from Dabo Swinney and defensive line coach Todd Bates. And he said as the big day draw nears, he still has all five schools on his list.
“Nothing’s changed,” Henry said. “I know I’ve said different things about different schools but at the end of the day I’m available for all five of them.” And that includes Alabama even though he had to cancel his official visit there.
Henry said he hopes to make the decision within the final 48 hours before the decision. He will not notify the schools in advance.
“I like the surprise factor of it,” he said. “A lot of coaches have told me that they like that they can’t read me and I think that’s what fun about it. We’ll leave it as a surprise and see which coach enjoys it and which coaches don’t.”
Henry said he will go with a hat to reveal the school he has chosen.
