Highly coveted 2019 CB returns to South Carolina, Gamecocks’ linemen camp opens Friday

2019 cornerback impresses at Muschamp Camp

Three-star CB John Dixon was offered by South Carolina during the spring of his freshman year at Wharton High School (Tampa, Fla.).

Later that summer, Dixon visited South Carolina twice, once for a session of Muschamp Camp and again unofficially. On Wednesday, he was back in Columbia for another round of camp.

“It’s still a great place, a great college,” Dixon said. “It’s probably going to be one of my top places.”

Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee have also offered the 5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect, who’s listed by 247Sports as the No. 20 cornerback in the Class of 2019.

“They’re going in a good direction,” he said of the Gamecocks. “[Muschamp is] doing nothing but building it up. I see them being a top school in a few years.”

If Dixon decides to call himself a Gamecock, defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson will likely have played a significant role in his recruitment.

“He’s real cool. He’s funny. He’s intense and every time I go down there, I learn something new from him,” Dixon said. “He always teaches me something.”

Robinson’s history of recruiting, developing and sending defensive backs to the NFL is appealing.

“It lets me know that I can trust him,” Dixon said. “He’s worked with some really good guys and I really stress everything he says to me.”

Linemen camp list of attendees taking shape

The first of two OL/DL camps will be hosted by the South Carolina coaches on Friday morning. Two of the Gamecocks’ 2018 offensive line commitments will be on hand: 3-star center Hank Manos (Chapin, S.C.) and 3-star guard LaMarius Benson (Covington, Ga.).

Wyatt Campbell, a 6-7, 285-pound tackle from Lugoff-Elgin (S.C.) High School, has confirmed plans to participate in the camp on Friday. Several Power 5 programs have offered Campbell, including Arizona State, Duke, Louisville, Maryland and Virginia Tech.

Another in-state target, 2019 OT Kamren McCray, will travel up from Berkeley High School (Moncks Corner). McCray is listed at 6-6 and 320 pounds.

The camp Saturday will include 2019 OT Michael Tarquin, a 4-star prospect from Belleview (Fla.) High School with several SEC offers, including South Carolina.

Greenwood (S.C.) High School 2019 defensive lineman Kobe Alexander is also confirmed as a Saturday camper
