How bare is the cupboard for Shane? Rating our units

OK, so I'm looking at each unit on both sides of the ball, and rating them from zero stars (total rebuild or zero proven depth) to five stars (we are set, in good shape, with quality depth). I encourage everyone to comment or make their own list! I am interested to see where we agree and disagree. Also, I didn't take into account potential incoming recruits; this is all about who is here, now.

OFFENSE

Offensive line: 3 star.png

The foundation is there; run blocking was obviously solid with KH getting over 1,000 yards in a shortened season, and Bobo's run schemes worked well. There is talent to replace the beloved Sindarious Hutcherson and other upperclassmen.

Tight ends:  2 star.png

Does Nick Muse stay or move on?  There is young talent there - Kaveon Mullins, Keyshawn Toney, etc. - but not a lot of reps.

Running Backs:  5 star.png

Between the emergence of All-SEC back Kevin Harris (click this link if you want to get pumped about next year), the return of Marshawn Lloyd, and a solid backup in Fenwick, this is the most solid group on the team IMO.

Wide receivers:  0 star.png

If Shi leaves (and this is my assumption, which is why they get this rating), this is as underproducing a room of three- and four-star talent as I have ever seen at Carolina. What gives?

Quarterbacks:4 star.png

The QB room is loaded with four-star talent in Doty and Hilinski, and both have now seen action. Who the OC is, and what systems he brings, will go a long long way to success at this position moving forward.

DEFENSE

Defensive line: 2 star.png

A DL anchored by two 5-stars in Pickens and Burch, and three young four-stars in Hemingway, Huntley, and Anderson, shouldn't be getting this low a rating. Underperforming.

Linebackers: 1 star.png

12/8 update: Bumped down to 1 star after the announcement that Ernest Jones was turning pro.

Safeties: 0 star.png

It is mind-boggling to me how CWM, a defensive guru whose specialty is safeties, could trot out 5 years' worth of converted high school QBs and undersized CBs to play safety for us. The last true talent we had at safety was Darian Stewart, and he left campus in 2010 ... ? Shilo showed some flashes this year; maybe he can build on that.

Cornerbacks: 2 star.png

After our starters departed for the NFL, we threw our young talent to the wolves, and they got gnawed on pretty good. Cam Smith and Johnny Dixon seemed to respond as they got more time, and the positions are in all likelihood theirs if they can step up.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter:4 star.png

Kai Kroeger did a great job as a frosh punter, so we should be set there for a few more years.

Placekicker: 0 star.png

Parker did a good job but will graduate. Nobody else has so much as attempted a PAT.

Thoughts?

You'll enjoy Etown...he's a good former poster from CT.

I'm not sure why Parker white WOULDN'T come back since this year doesn't count, so that will solve some of the PK problems, but hopefully our next coaching staff can see the obvious that if the ball is in the middle of the field, he's money. If he has to kick from the right hash, across his body, dont even try it if there is another option. He's got a leg, but struggled with direction.

Kroeger gets 4 stars? Didnt he shank several punts early? He never actually boomed any punts the rest of the season. That pass to Joyner was money though!!!

If we're talking about potential,  the DL group deserve another half star at least. When we get some decent coaching conditioning, they may explode.

I expect Nick Muse to be back as I dont think he gets a great draft grade.

I expect Sherrod greene back as well .

Parker: good point, dunno about his decision

Kai: shanking a couple in this first SEC games as a true frosh doesn't ding him in my book; if a guy finishes 7th out of 14 in the SEC when he was in high school last year, that works for me, lol

DL: Good point but this is based on past body of work ... but I agree, so much unrealized potential there

Muse: I hope you are right; he seemed to say if Bentley came back he would too, maybe not if BB was let go ... we'll see

DL is still undersized no matter who returns.  WR is atrocious.  TE not much better.  I heard Beamer offered a juco WR and a juco CB today.

I saw that the JUCO CB was offered by Kitchings (or at least the recruit singled him out in his tweet) ... does that perhaps point to him staying?

It is waaay too early to look at this. Everyone that played this year can come back - the shortened Covid year does not count against eligibility. If a player is not a likely draft pick due to missing some or all of the season, it would make sense to return and boost your stock. If you are unlikely to get drafted, it still makes sense to return - have fun playing football and get another degree.

Then you have the guys that will leave due to the coaching change. And there will be a huuge pool of grad transfers - because everyone got another year of athletic eligibility while completing a full academic year.

Even people like Keir Thomas and Aaron Sterling could take a victory lap next year. And why wouldn't Sherrod Greene come back? He missed the whole year and will not get an NFL look unless he shows he is healthy and has a big year.
Good point about the Gard Transfers. We should be able to pick up quite a few to fill some gaps from everyone that has a year of extra eligibility.

Those are all good points, but still worthwhile IMO to look at these units and see how Shane might be evaluating them - where might the transfers be needed most, for example? Looking at each position group with a critical eye is never a bad point of reflection because while of course they will change from one month (or day) to the next, understanding what Shane inherits as a baseline is a good exercise.

Also important to note that there might not be enough scholarship spots to both give every senior a mulligan AND have a robust class AND entertain portal transfers.

IMO, this all comes down to call of how much you think CWM's ability to develop talent sucked. or more positively, how much better Shane will be at developing talent. Big question mark without a staff in place.

Agree with Spork.

Also in most cases when there is a coaching change, there is an uptick in play, simply from the honeymoon period with a new coach. So Muschamp could have undercoached/underutilized talent sitting on the bench waiting to make an impact.

Also the transfer portal will be interesting.

Oh and Ernest Jones is going to the draft.

Well, there is certainly a disconnect somewhere. If a school regularly brings in top 20 talent, they should not be winning 2 games a year. Was it lack of development, the fact that some players were there just as a stop to the NFL, were the ranking a bust or was it all of the above?

I think it's a bit of everything listed.

In general, I agree. However its tough to have college just be a stop on the way to the NFL if you don't perform in college.
