OK, so I'm looking at each unit on both sides of the ball, and rating them from zero stars (total rebuild or zero proven depth) to five stars (we are set, in good shape, with quality depth). I encourage everyone to comment or make their own list! I am interested to see where we agree and disagree. Also, I didn't take into account potential incoming recruits; this is all about who is here, now.
OFFENSE
Offensive line:
The foundation is there; run blocking was obviously solid with KH getting over 1,000 yards in a shortened season, and Bobo's run schemes worked well. There is talent to replace the beloved Sindarious Hutcherson and other upperclassmen.
Tight ends:
Does Nick Muse stay or move on? There is young talent there - Kaveon Mullins, Keyshawn Toney, etc. - but not a lot of reps.
Running Backs:
Between the emergence of All-SEC back Kevin Harris (click this link if you want to get pumped about next year), the return of Marshawn Lloyd, and a solid backup in Fenwick, this is the most solid group on the team IMO.
Wide receivers:
If Shi leaves (and this is my assumption, which is why they get this rating), this is as underproducing a room of three- and four-star talent as I have ever seen at Carolina. What gives?
Quarterbacks:
The QB room is loaded with four-star talent in Doty and Hilinski, and both have now seen action. Who the OC is, and what systems he brings, will go a long long way to success at this position moving forward.
DEFENSE
Defensive line:
A DL anchored by two 5-stars in Pickens and Burch, and three young four-stars in Hemingway, Huntley, and Anderson, shouldn't be getting this low a rating. Underperforming.
Linebackers:
12/8 update: Bumped down to 1 star after the announcement that Ernest Jones was turning pro.
Safeties:
It is mind-boggling to me how CWM, a defensive guru whose specialty is safeties, could trot out 5 years' worth of converted high school QBs and undersized CBs to play safety for us. The last true talent we had at safety was Darian Stewart, and he left campus in 2010 ... ? Shilo showed some flashes this year; maybe he can build on that.
Cornerbacks:
After our starters departed for the NFL, we threw our young talent to the wolves, and they got gnawed on pretty good. Cam Smith and Johnny Dixon seemed to respond as they got more time, and the positions are in all likelihood theirs if they can step up.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Punter:
Kai Kroeger did a great job as a frosh punter, so we should be set there for a few more years.
Placekicker:
Parker did a good job but will graduate. Nobody else has so much as attempted a PAT.
Thoughts?
