I think NC State and Virginia Tech would be the best options. I also think that if the SEC made a cold blooded business decision and picked East Carolina, they would be the preeminent football program in that state in five years. Of course they don't need to do that, as they could pick NC State (if NC State wanted to join) and the Wolfpack would become number one in North Carolina almost immediately.
The important things I think would be to get into the North Carolina and Virginia markets.
If you wanted another Florida team, I think Miami would be a better choice than FSU. They aren't going to be on probation forever, and the talent is so good down there a good coach can build a national championship contender in three years probably, maybe four at worst.
And that would be starting from scratch. I know the fans don't show up for the games, all that stuff. But Miami is a very peculiar school. It doesn't take much to get something big going there.
