Injury from car wreck sidelines USC commit Malik Young

09/05/13

South Carolina offensive line commitment Malik Young's senior season is on hold while he recovers from an injury suffered in a car accident this week.

Young, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman from Woodmont High in Piedmont, fractured his jaw Tuesday in the single-car wreck. No surgery will be needed, he said.

He's expected to be out of action for up to a month and out of practice for more than two weeks. He can still lift weights.

Young described the incident to GoGamecocks via text message: "I was driving on my way to school. My tire blew out and then I ran into a puddle, hit a ditch went airborne and crashed into a opposite ditch. The highway patrolman said if I had been doing over 30 I'd be dead right now. I honestly don't know how I broke my jaw. I think it is from the force of the impact."

Young committed to South Carolina on May 28. This past Friday he was credited with two pancakes and three extra efforts in a 35-14 win over Wren High.

With the injury, Young said he can't chew much but has a special diet planned while he recovers so he won't lose weight.

"Mashed potatoes and protein shakes for now," he said on Twitter.
