NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — 4 star QB Dakereon Joyner 6'1" 190lbs revealed his commitment to South Carolina during a ceremony on Father’s Day at Fort Dorchester High School.
The announcement was made in honor of his late father, Damond Alton Joyner.
South Carolina landed the 4-star quarterback over North Carolina State. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Oregon were among the offers for Joyner, who competed earlier this month in the Elite 11 Finals.
According to the 247Sports composite, Joyner is ranked as the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018. Nationally, his overall rankings is 227, which is highest among the Gamecocks commitments.
South Carolina’s haul is now up to 10 commitments. Joyner’s the first 4-star in the class.
“He’s just got the it-factor,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “He’s different. I just told the family. … ‘Don’t take this the wrong way, when Carlos Dunlap came through, I called him a freak — not that he’s a bad freak — he was a freak.
“‘I’m not so sure Dakereon’s not an alien.'”
Three-star wide receiver commitment Darius Rush likened him to former NFL quarterback Michael Vick.
“His elusiveness — he has great feet, great footwork. When things go wrong, he can make a play out of anything,” Rush said. “He has a great arm and he has good field vision.”
Three-star safety R.J. Roderick, who pledged to the Gamecocks earlier this month, believes Joyner brings a lot to the table, more than just talent.
“His leadership skills and the chemistry that he has, he’ll be your friend on and off the field, somebody that you can connect with. … I mean, he’s just a respectable dude,” Roderick said. “He’s real cool and real down to earth as well.”
