Irmo DE Trajan Jeffcoat hopes to land South Carolina offer next week at camp

May 26, 2017

For Irmo (S.C.) High School coach Reggie Kennedy, the decision to change weight programs has proved to be the right move.

Rising senior defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat weighed 198 pounds when he visited South Carolina in January. About four months later, he’s up to 228.

“We really kind of see the benefit from switching over to the new program, for [Jeffcoat] and a few other kids in our program, so that says a whole lot for him also, to make the commitment to the weight room,” Kennedy said. “He knew he needed to put on some weight in order to get to the next level.”

That, along with a strong showing at the EPT Showcase on Sunday, has helped launch Jeffcoat’s recruiting stock.

At this time last week, he had offers from Appalachian State, Colorado State and East Carolina. Missouri, Indiana, Middle Tennessee and Georgia State have since jumped on board.

South Carolina Bucks coach Mike Peterson stopped by the school this week. Coaches from Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech have, too. All want him to visit this summer for camp.

The Gamecocks will see him next Saturday on the first day of Muschamp Camp.

“They’ve been saying for me to get to the camp,” Jeffcoat said. “They’ve really been encouraging me to get to the camp. If I do good at this camp that’s coming up, I’ll be looking at an offer.”

It’s an offer that he covets.

“I grew up a big Gamecocks fan, always wanted to be a Gamecock,” Jeffcoat said.

To make that happen, he’ll continue to do what he’s been doing for the last several months, with prayer and hard work as his key ingredients.

“You can just tell the difference, him being in the weight room this past spring,” Kennedy said. “He’s just a lot more physical than he was last year at this time. He’s just playing with so much more confidence now out there on the field.”

The future

Jeffcoat makes no bones about it. He wants to play in the SEC.

“Everybody watches it. That would be a big jump for me if I go to an SEC college,” he said.

Playing for Muschamp at South Carolina would be ideal.

“That would be a person that I really want to play for, just the swag that he brought to USC. It’s something I just like,” Jeffcoat said. “Any team in the SEC I would love to go to, but the Gamecocks I grew up a real big fan [of them].”

When Jeffcoat gets to the point where he’s ready to make a decision, he’ll consider a couple of factors.

“First, I’m going to look at what school excels in the business management major,” Jeffcoat said. “I’m going to look at that and also what’s going to be the best fit for me.”

Maybe he will
