Jonathan Sewell talks South Carolina teammate’s commitment to Gamecocks

Dec. 29, 2016

"“South Carolina, the way they treat their players, it’s way better than Georgia. That’s why South Carolina will be one of my top, probably until my senior year.”"

I wonder what that means exactly... Is it the Facilities, the coaches, something else, or just the entire environment that Muschamp and Company have built? From the outside the program seems to be well run, the players on board, and everything trending upward so I am excited to see something like this that shows behind the scenes things are positive as well.

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. – According to the 247Sports rankings, 4-star Jonathan Sewell is the No. 8-ranked running back in the class of 2019.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect from Clarke Central High School in Athens, Ga. is busy this week, getting ready to play in the Georgia Elite Classic sophomore game.

Coaches for the National Team raved about his elusiveness after practice on Wednesday morning.

That wiggle was on display this fall when Sewell rushed for 1,042 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall. He also caught 18 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns.

As a result, Sewell said Georgia is close to offering. Clemson, Georgia Tech and Ohio State continue to express interest.

South Carolina, his lone Power 5 offer, pulled the trigger in the summer. Sewell landed it when he was on campus for the Will Muschamp Football Camp with his teammate, 2017 safety Zay Brown, who’s committed to the Gamecocks.

“Zay said he’s committed. He’s finished,” Sewell said.

That includes their hometown Dawgs, whom they visited a few times this fall for games.

“Kirby (Smart) wanted to talk to him, but (Brown) didn’t want to talk,” Sewell said. “He said he’s going to stick to South Carolina.”
However, Brown has already made it clear that he will not pressure Sewell into joining him.

“He was basically telling me it was my own choice. I can do what I want to do,” Sewell said. “South Carolina is one of my top ones. Right now, they treat me like family. They treat me like I’m at home. That’s why it’s one of the top ones who are up there.”
His last visit was for the home opener against East Carolina.

“I loved it, the whole environment. It got lit up,” Sewell said.

He added, “After they win, I went into the locker room and talked to (running backs coach) Bobby (Bentley). He told me to go and talk to the players and stuff.

“South Carolina, the way they treat their players, it’s way better than Georgia. That’s why South Carolina will be one of my top, probably until my senior year.”
