June storylines for the Gamecocks
May 31, 2017
The month of June should be another busy one for South Carolina as the summer recruiting period kicks off.
The first of 10 camp sessions in Columbia starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and there are a handful of prospects who are expected to compete on Day 1.
For Will Muschamp and the Gamecock coaching staff, June is a critical stretch for the 2018 signing class, but not just because of what’s going on around campus.
Up in the air
Co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper appears to be in a good spot to land 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner, when he announces his commitment on Father’s Day. North Carolina State is the other finalist for the 2018 prospect from Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.).
Keeping a healthy number of quarterbacks on hand is critical for any program and South Carolina only has three on scholarship right now.
Perhaps that’s why it’s so important that Tyler Shough will return to South Carolina on June 8. The 3-star from Chandler, Ariz. also has plans to see North Carolina. Michigan is believed to be the odds-on favorite, but South Carolina made quite an impression during his first visit to Columbia.
If you want decipher how Joyner and Shough stack up against the rest of the country’s top 2018 quarterbacks, keep an eye on the Elite 11 Finals, which run June 2-4. The top performers will be invited to The Opening Finals in Oregon.
Eyes on Beaverton
Recruiting buffs will be at full attention when the best prospects in the country assemble in at the Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. from June 28-July 3.
Channing Tindall, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 overall prospect from the state of South Carolina, is set to be among the Gamecock targets at this year’s event. The 4-star linebacker from Spring Valley High School in Columbia earned his invite after an outstanding performance during the regional event in Atlanta.
Elite edge rushers are always heavily targeted by Muschamp on the recruiting trail, but acquiring some in the 2018 class is a priority with 5-stars KJ Henry (Clemmons, N.C.) and Xavier Thomas (Florence, S.C.) firmly positioned in the cross-hairs. They were invited after attending the Charlotte and Orlando events, respectively.
Three other South Carolina targets who attended the stop in Charlotte: 3-star offensive guard Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.), 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.) and 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.).
Muschamp Camp pop
Linebacker Davonne Bowen, wide receiver Shi Smith, cornerback Tavyn Jackson and safety Jaylin Dickerson committed to South Carolina last June.
The Gamecocks also landed June commitments from defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt and cornerback Damarri Mathis, both of whom later de-committed and signed elsewhere.
Which 2018 prospects will jump on board with South Carolina later this month? Stay tuned to find out. But know this: June should provide plenty of fireworks.
