Junior wide receiver Patrick Phongsat gearing up for South Carolina visit

Feb. 11, 2017

The state of South Carolina has a boatload of prospects from the 2018 class with major college scholarship offers.

Perhaps the strongest position in the state is wide receiver, several of whom have received SEC offers.

One in-state wide receiver who continues to fly under the recruiting radar is Patrick Phongsat, a 5-foot-10, 166-pound prospect from Chapman High School in Inman.

As a junior, for the 3A state championship winning Panthers, Phongsat caught 63 passes for 1,191 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the title game at Williams-Brice Stadium, he caught six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Phongsat put on the impressive performance in front of South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and his staff.

“South Carolina is a nice school. I would like to go there,” Phongsat said. “It’s not my dream school, but …”

The dream school is in Chapel Hill, N.C.

“I went for a junior day as a freshman and it was just a pretty campus there,” Phongsat said. “Everything was nice about it. I fell in love when I saw the football facility and everything else.”

South Carolina is in line for a visit in the not too distant future. Phongsat wasn’t certain of the date, but his coach, Mark Hodge, told him that it was on the docket. In June, Phongsat will return to North Carolina for camp.

The Gamecocks hosted him last summer for camp, and he went to a game at Coastal Carolina in the fall. Coaches from Presbyterian and Limestone have also been in contact.

Phongsat attends the same high school that produced South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

“Seeing Deebo do well just gives me more motivation to work harder, to work yourself, because anything is possible,” Phongsat said. “How well he is doing now, maybe one day I can be doing that, just through working.”
