K.J. Wallace knows what it’s like to play for Muschamp
Dec. 28, 2016
POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. – Four-star cornerback K.J. Wallace has an idea of what it might be like to play for South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp.
Wallace, a sophomore from The Lovett School in Atlanta, plays for Mike Muschamp, Boom’s older brother.
“Honestly, when you hear them on the phone, they sound the same. They sound like the same person and when you see what they do – they sound like the same person,” Wallace said. “You can see the similarities, but it’s not like my head coach is pressuring me to go to South Carolina or whatever. He wants me to make the decision myself.”
Auburn is the only school he’s visited within the last six months.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound cornerback has offers from both schools, to go along with Tennessee, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Central Michigan.
“This year, I wasn’t too focused on going places. I was just working out, just working on getting better,” Wallace said. “Mainly, getting better as a DB, because last year was my first year playing DB, so this season, being my second year, I needed to progress with that.”
Led by assistants Rodney Garner and Wesley McGriff, the Auburn staff is off to a strong start. Plus, Wallace is comfortable with the school.
“It’s real close, an hour and 30 minutes from the house, so it’s an easy shot. It’s straight, then you take a left and you’re at Auburn. It’s really that close. … I like it,” Wallace said. “I really like the school, from the visits I’ve been up there.
“People up there – I have some friends that go there right now. It’s a good school. I like the academics and athletics up there.”
Will Muschamp is still working to get him to visit South Carolina.
“I really need to get up there,” Wallace said. “I really want to.”
The No. 5-ranked cornerback (247Sports) in the class of 2019 believes Muschamp has the Gamecocks headed in the right direction.
“It’s an upcoming program. Right now, they’re kind of down,” Wallace said, “But I feel like, in a few years, they’ll be good, because I know he’s a good coach. He’ll help them out.”
Wallace didn’t grow up rooting for a college football team. His only allegiance is “sadly” to the New Orleans Saints.
Even though it’s on the other side of the country, Stanford would be an intriguing option to Wallace, who sports a 3.6 GPA.
“I’m a big academics guy,” he said. “I know football is going to end one day, so I want to go somewhere that’s going to help me out for the next 40 years.”
An opportunity to enjoy the college experience will also be heavily weighed.
“I don’t want it to be too heavy football. I want to actually experience college a little bit. I don’t just want to be football, football, football – I actually want to have a college life, so those are my main two factors,” Wallace said. “And, definitely, coaching staff.”
As a sophomore, Wallace caught 51 passes for 612 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also had 11 tackles and 2 interceptions.
