Lamont Paris’ to head up the men's basketball program at South Carolina

March 22, 2022

South Carolina is poised to hire Chattanooga’s Lamont Paris as its next head men’s basketball coach, with an official announcement expected this week. Paris will be the 33rd head coach in program history and will take over for 10-year head coach Frank Martin, who was fired on March 14. ESPN reported Paris and the Gamecocks agreed to a five-year contract. The 47-year-old led the Mocs to a 27-8 record this season and made the NCAA tournament, and Paris holds a career 87-71 record with the program in his five seasons. This year’s March Madness bid was Paris’ first as a head coach, and the No. 13-seed Mocs lost by one point to No. 4-seed Illinois. Prior to arriving in Chattanooga, he served as an assistant coach at Wisconsin from 2011-17, working under Bo Ryan and then Greg Gard.

What Lamont Paris’ needs to do?

TRY TO SALVAGE GG JACKSON RELATIONSHIP
Ridge View High School’s G.G. Jackson, the No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class, was a top target for Martin and his coaching staff, and Martin said on the radio with Phil Kornblut this week that he believed the Gamecocks were going to land his commitment.

Holding on to the roster Only graduate students James Reese and A.J. Wilson aren’t eligible to return, but it seems likely if not probable that veterans Keyshawn Bryant, Jermaine Couisnard and Erik Stevenson will explore their professional options. Both Bryant and Couisnard dabbled in the NBA draft process a year ago. Also, there’s the transfer portal. March Madness is still going, and there are nearly 600 names already in the portal. Last year, seven Gamecocks transferred away from the team and six players transferred in. With a coaching change, there’s bound to be some roster attrition.

Look at this year's recruiting class shortly after Martin’s firing, Baltimore-based point guard Bryce Lindsay announced his decommitment from the Gamecocks. As it stands, the Gamecocks have two three-star 2022 signees in Daniel Hankins-Sanford out of Charlotte and Zach Davis out of Denmark. Both stand at 6-foot-8 and are raw, physical prospects. Much like Lindsay, both will have decisions to make now that Martin is no longer in the picture. Paris will have to decide, too, if Hankins-Sanford and Davis fit the mold of what he’s looking for in building the program. Either through the 2022 recruiting class or the transfer portal or both, expect Paris to put his own imprint on the program over the next few weeks.

This new contract is a head scratcher…

$2.2M in his first year. He went from $250k annually to 2.2M and averaging $2.4M over the next 5 years. If he’s fired without cause, USC owes him 65% of his remaining contract. (I think I saw where that’s the equivalent of $5M in year #1).

I don’t wish ill of the man, by any means, but I don’t understand how a coach can jump THAT much in salary just because he’s joining an SEC school. Ray Tanner needs to go, that’s all I’m saying.

Now all of the above being said, I’m behind Coach Paris all the way from her forward.

That might have been the $ needed to get a coach 2-3 spots down your list to just come here and give it a shot. Could be a career making or breaking type job and it’s definitely a big risk. Wish him nothing but success here but if that’s accurate it’s puzzling.

I would like to see us go to a base + performance incentives contract structure for our coaching new hires going forward.

Do that rather than excessive base + bonus.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s obvious our athletics department is not getting on top of this Lamont Paris thing. Both Dawn Staley and Shane Beamer tweeted out “welcome” messages in response to the official announcement. Lamont Paris has NO SOCIAL MEDIA accounts of his own, so won’t see that info. I know it’s for everyone else’s benefit, but come on… that just seems amateurish.

Betting the Carolina media folks will help him with that twitter account! I was impressed with the press conference. Don't know about that contract. Wishing him success. Hit that recruiting trail, coach!

This contract is a head scratcher for sure. I thought Ray would have learned after the muschamp debacle. I find it wild that he doesn't have social media, how does he recruit?

The contract isn't that much of a head scratcher. It's pretty close to what other coaches going from mid-major to SEC are getting. Both Gates at Mizzou and McMahon at LSU are getting somewhere in the $2.5M range. That's just the cost of doing business now.

But that doesn’t mean it HAS to be that amount. McMahon was a hot commodity, so he could command his price. Don’t get me wrong… I want Coach Paris to succeed. Heck, I want GG to come play for him. Does that mean $2.2M? I’m not in a position to say one way or the other. Just seems steep jump to me for a move from mid-major to SEC.

If that's where the market is, then it needs to be comparable. Sure, we could offer less for a coach, but if it's far below the rest of the conference, you're going to be going way, way, way down your list to find someone willing to come here. And, when you do find that guy, nobody is going to be happy with the hire and he's going to have limited support.

Well I didn't see the interview live so I watched it last night and I've got to say that I came away pleasantly surprised and impressed with Lamont Paris. I thought he was very articulate, smart, and full of confidence. I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish. He was a breath of fresh air for the men's basketball program IMO.

From the data I saw yesterday, it's the lowest salary for men's basketball in the SEC. There may be a reason why we continue to miss out on targeted coaches.

I watched it as well and got the same impression. Will certainly bring a different kind of energy to the team. I'm cautiously optimistic. Same way I felt after watching the Beamer presser when he was introduced.
