Last fall scrimmage where do the Gamecocks stand
August 22, 2022

Rattler on leadership: is the starter and carries himself like the starter and leader. Rattler is very involved with his teammates including the defense. “You’d never know that kid has only been here a few months from how the team responds to him. It’s almost like they’re looking for his approval. He’s really good and he has off-the-chain arm talent”.

Rattler looking like the most talented QB to start at South Carolina. He doesn’t believe Rattler “ owns the huddle”

Doty the backup: Doty clearly understands what is expected of him this season and has embraced his role. He’s going to prepare himself every day to step up when his number is called. Doty’s touch on throws is vastly better. During the scrimmage, Doty trusted his protection better and wasn’t looking to run but give the route time to develop, “he intends to be ready at any point this season and knows he’s the presumed starter next year but said he had to keep growing because there are guys in our QB room who are going to be darn good”. Doty and Rattler did work together a lot during the summer. Often meeting up in different places.

The speed of the offense in getting the call and then getting the ball snapped. It’s not a hurry-up offense but they’re just getting it called, letting the 1st 2 QBs make a change if needed, then get the ball snapped. The pace will increase the number of offensive plays to increase by 10 to 15 more per game. “Increasing the number of offensive plays is how you keep all those guys wanting the ball, happy”. Satt wants to average 20 seconds.

Bell is building a unique role for him in this offense. Bell could go over 1500 receiving and 800 rushings. Bell will be a feature back and a 1st round pick. Transformation of Bell’s body will be a big assist. Bell has these huge hands and Soft hands that help him grab the ball with one hand and has confidence in doing it. There’s nothing Bell can’t do. He Dak is a close second, simply a smaller version of Bell, and look for Satt to give Dak his “freedom” to just go perform.

OLine: Communication is much better. Though “quickness” is a concern with both tackles. Rattler and Doty got the ball out quickly which really. Wannamakker and Wonnum need to be on the field together, but neither is a true Left tackle. It’s just clear those two are the best linemen as of now. freshmen OL is the future. next year's OL will be better once they develop together and gain experience. “Based on what we’ve seen in the body types and mindset Atkins and Beamer recruited last year, currently in this class and are lining up for next yr, OLine will quickly become a strength on our future offenses”. Current starters and next 2 or 3 somewhere around the mid-SEC level. be no surprise if one or two current freshman push for playing time toward the end of the season “a couple of those guys are just quicker than the older guys”.

Over WR are well coached and all seem to be running good routes. Rattler puts the ball right in the hands of the WR. Been a long time around here since they're seen receivers know how to use their hands and NOT get called for it. Stogner looks like a first-down maker. The single linebacker won’t be able to cover him and he’s going to catch it. Stogner has the ability to cut quickly and on a dime getting himself open and positioned. “I’d have loved that guy on 3rd down. He’s going to get open, he’s going a fight to make the catch and he’ll go up and get it”. Looking like a couple of young guys looked good but they lack experience in the defensive backfield when they pulled the starters because there’s a lot of youth and inexperience back there at times and that always favors the receiver but did say they look talented and fast.

Defense

The size, speed in the defensive backfield being very noticeable, tackling was very good for this early and there’s a couple of “Players” running around out there in the first 15, just head hunting and they were “finding bodies to put in bags”. LoL.

Thoughts- if both the players and coaches can all get to the point they know how to and will just put teams away - this group has no ceiling. They can win every game but if they all don’t learn to “snap the neck” when that moment in the game comes, they could lose 6 or more. This team needs to learn to go for the kill early. Shane needs to let the offense free, the defense will be fine.

We will know what we have by Game 4.

The question is, do we make any changes to the starting line-up that early or do we what until mid-season after the season is already trashed to do it if it's really needed?

Muschamp waited until it was too late most of the time. I think this will be where Shane and the staff "grow an inch" into their roles.

I believe Shane will make the right moves at the right time.

Hopefully the biggest news is we're a lot deeper this year and we made it through fall camp injury-free for the most part.
