Late interceptions preserve South’s 13-10 win over North (AUDIO)

DECEMBER 15, 2018                   BY PHIL KORNBLUT

Christ Church coach Don Frost has a reputation for being a gunslinger in calling his offensive plays.  So in the dying moments of Saturday’s Touchstone Energy Bowl at Brooks Stadium at Coastal Carolina, he dug into his bag of tricks.  And it backfired. The South claimed a 13-10 win to snap a three game losing streak in the series.

The North, trailing 13-10,  had the ball at their own 44 with under a minute to play.  On first down, Frost called for a little razzle-dazzle as quarterback Tyrell Jackson pitched the ball on a reverse to receiver Zack Hillstock.  Hillstock heaved the ball downfield but it was under thrown and intercepted by Calantre Morrison to seal the victory.

It was the second straight possession for the North that ended with an interception.  The previous on may have been even more painful.  After recovering a fumbled by by Kenny Solomon at the South 16, a third down Jackson pass into the end zone also was intercepted by Morrison.

The North missed on another excellent scoring opportunity earlier in the game after being stopped on downs at the South 1 late in the first half.

The North settled for a 3-0 halftime lead thanks for a 47 yard Patrick Nations field goal.   Solomon gave the South their first lead with a 46 yard interception return for a touchdown midway thru the third. They built the lead to 13-7 on an 24 yard run by Anthony Williams.  The extra point attempt was mishandled.

Joe Ervin cut the lead to 13-10 with a 17 yard run less than a minute later, and that would be it for the scoring.

For their four possessions of the fourth quarter, the North had three interceptions and a punt.  The South wasn’t any better fumbling twice and punting on their three possessions.

Tiyon Evans led the South offense with 142 rushing yards and a catch of 53 yards, and Ervin led the North with 102 yards.  They were the offensive MVPs for their teams.  Defensive honors went to Morrison for the South and Ethan Alexander for the North.

With the win, the South cuts the deficit in the series to 39-29-2.  At halftime, TL Hanna defensive end Zacch Pickens was named Mr. Football in SC.
