Latest updates on Gamecocks’ class
September 08, 2017
The 2018 South Carolina football recruiting class is nearing completion with 19 commitments for coach Will Muschamp.
That figure doesn’t include the lone holdover from the 2017 class, defensive end Tyreek Johnson, who will arrive in January as a grayshirt. Though they’re close to max capacity, the Gamecocks have work to do.
Below is an update on where things stand for the 2018 class:
Where the South Carolina class ranks
According to the 247Sports composite, South Carolina’s 2018 class is ranked as the No. 20 overall group in the country. Washington is 19. Mississippi State is 21. Among SEC programs, the Gamecocks are sixth.
Offers by the numbers
5-star DE KJ Henry (Clemmons, N.C.)
Henry lists South Carolina as a finalist with Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Virginia Tech. The No. 2 weakside defensive end in the country will visit Clemson this weekend for its game against Auburn.
4-star OT Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.)
Wonnum, who was once believed to be a heavy South Carolina lean, is now favoring Auburn. If South Carolina is able to get him on campus next weekend for the Kentucky game, the Gamecocks will have a shot to sway him back their way.
4-star ILB Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.)
Hollifield went to Atlanta last Saturday to watch Florida State play Alabama. The Noles, of course, are one of five teams he’s considering. South Carolina, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Stanford are also in the mix.
