South Carolina's coaching staff utilized the bye week to hit the recruiting trail and one prospect they checked in on was class of 3 star 2015 inside linebacker Daniel Fennell 6'2" 220lbs (Loganville, Ga./Grayson). With the loss of former commitment Davon Durant, signing another linebacker has become a priority for this class and apparently the coaches liked what they saw in Fennell enough to offer him a scholarship to fill that spot.

"Coach Mangus is the one that offered me and he is a really cool guy. I talk to him a lot on the phone," Daniel Fennell said. "But I got to meet Coach Botkin as well. He came to the school last Thursday and he told me about the school and where they like me to play. They said I would start off at the WILL when I was younger and eventually would become a MIKE. It all sounded pretty good to me."

Fennell already held offers from a host of programs including Duke, Michigan State, Louisville, Missouri, Texas A&M and Wisconsin. But he says that getting the offer from the Gamecocks was definitely important to him and he has already made plans to go see Carolina in action.

"It was great to get the offer,"Daniel Fenell said. "The coach said he was wowed when he saw me and he offered me on the spot. It feels great to get an offer from an SEC school that is so close to home. I definitely have a lot of interest in South Carolina and am going to visit soon.

"I am going to go up on the 22nd. I don't know if its going to be for an official visit or an unofficial yet but I will definitely be there for the game against South Alabama."

Fennell has been one of the most productive players in one of the most competitive counties for high school football in the nation. He has racked up 83 tackles on the season, good for sixth in Gwinnett county. Fennell says his athleticism and physicality are the biggest reasons for that production.

"I'm a very rangy player. I play sideline to sideline and I don't just drag people down, I am going to hit you," Fennel said. "That's what (Botkin) said he liked about me the most is that I can cover the while field."

Fennell plays for Grayson which is in the same region as traditional powers Brookwood and Parkview as well as the more recently built Archer high school, where current Gamecock commits Connor Redmond and Kyle Davis play. Grayson finished the regular season in a three-way tie for first place in the region and a coin flip was needed to determine seeding for the playoffs.

Now with the matchups set, Fennell feels like his defense, which is giving up just 8.1 points per game, is ready for any challenge ahead.

"We feel like if we prepare every week we will be fine," Fennell said. "We have major talent at all three levels on defense. A team will really have to outsmart us and outphysicial us to beat us and catch us on a bad day. We feel like as a defense we are ready for any challenge we will face."

Once the playoffs are out of the way Fennell will have more time to focus on recruiting. Although he does not currently have any visits set up other than his trip to Columbia, he does have a few other schools that he is highly interested in.

"I really like South Carolina, Michigan State, Missouri, Duke and Wisconsin," Fennell said. "I haven't heard from Texas A&M in a while so I don't really know what's going on with them but I like them too."

Fennell is rated as a three-star and the No. 18 inside linebacker in the nation
