LB Samuel Brooks sees good fit in USC defense

LB Samuel Brooks 6'3" 200lbs of Miami recently announced a final two of USC and Miami. It’s obvious why the Hurricanes are there. They’re the hometown team and he’s been impressed with what Mark Richt has done there. The Gamecocks are there because of how Brooks sees himself excelling in their defense.
“Coach Hutzler came down about three weeks ago and my coach introduced me to him. He offered me and said he loves me and I fit their scheme and everything,” Brooks said. “I’ve been studying their defense and that’s how they became in my top two. Their defensive scheme fits me. I love the 3-4 type of defense. I play defensive end in high school but I know on the next level my hand isn’t going to be in the dirt. I’m going to be rushing. I’m an edge rusher but I’m going to be in open space more. Coach T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) told me about it, too. He told me he’ll show me some things when I go up there in the spring.”
Brooks has never visited USC and he said he will take an unofficial visit in March to watch a practice. He said he’s in touch with Will Muschamp practically every day.
“He talks to me about how I’m going to get up there and rushing me to get up there,” he said. “He doesn’t only talk about football. He talks about school and everything like that. I think he’s a good coach because he hasn’t only talked to me about football. Some college coaches don’t do that, they just talk football, but he talks about academics and all that stuff. He talks about the facilities, school and football. I think he’s a good coach.”
He also thinks Miami’s Richt is doing a good job and the Hurricanes are equally attractive to him.
“The Hurricanes treat me well,” he said. “I had an injury in October, a torn ACL and meniscus. Before that, the Hurricanes actually offered me last summer. When they offered me, it was like they’re on my back. When I got hurt, it was even more crazy and that showed me they really love me and want me in their program. Some colleges could have backed off but they are still fighting for me. Coach Richt is an awesome coach. He has changed the Miami program a little bit, in a better way.”
Brooks played in five games last season before the injury to his left knee. He had surgery in October and said he is on track for a full recovery. Prior to the injury he had around 60 tackles and 8 sacks. As a sophomore he had over 100 tackles and 16 sacks.
Brooks said at this point he’s looking at being an early graduate and a December signee. He plans to take his two official visits this summer but won’t make a decision until his season.
Some of his other offers are Auburn, NC State, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Purdue, Central Florida and South Florida.
