LB Sherrod Greene was so impressed by Gamecocks, he had to commit

July 25, 2016

Sherrod Greene went into a weekend visit to South Carolina with no plan to commit, but that plan soon changed.

The 2017 Rocky Mount (N.C.) linebacker went home Saturday after visiting Columbia and was up all night thinking about it. When Sunday rolled around, he had a decision made.

“After the visit I had (Saturday), it was just how comfortable I felt and the coaches talking about the opportunities I would have,” he said. “I was just impressed.”

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Greene called the South Carolina coaches on Sunday night to inform them of his decision, getting a response of excitement to coach him once he arrives in a year.

Greene, who also had offers from the likes of Alabama, Cal, North Carolina and N.C. State, said he fits in with the defense well at the inside linebacker spot, but also brings the ability to play the outside spot. But it’s not the on-field fit that made him want to be a Gamecock, as it was about the people around the program.

“I talk to them and it feel like I’ve known them already for a long time and I’m having full-blown conversations with them,” he said. “Basically, just took me into their home.”

Greene is commit No. 18 in the 2017 class, which grew by two over the weekend as Greene joined Athens (Ga.) Clarke Central safety Zay Brown as the latest commits to buy into what Will Muschamp and Co. are starting in Columbia.

“They are bringing in better players and I made my commitment, so I’m going to do my job to try and bring more players, to,” Greene said. “It’s just part of the rebuilding process, but we are going to be a good team.”

And now that Greene is in the fold, he figures to play a nice part in that future. For now, he is just excited to have the recruiting process behind him.

“It was a big relief after all that,” he said. “When I made my commitment, it felt like a whole weight was lifted off my shoulders because I have been talking to all these coaches and it has gotten kinda stressful, to be honest. I was ready to commit.”
