The University of South Carolina Athletics Department and the Gamecock men's basketball program will honor the 1971 ACC men's basketball championship team on Saturday at halftime of Carolina's 6 p.m. ET match-up vs. Ole Miss, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the team's title.  Due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols the celebration will be virtual this season, with a video tribute at halftime, and next season, the championship squad will be honored in person at the program's annual Legends Weekend, at a date to be determined in February 2022. South Carolina captured the 1971 ACC championship on a last second layup from Gamecock great Tom Owens.  With time running out against North Carolina in the ACC finals and the Gamecocks down 51-50, a jump ball was called with Carolina's Kevin Joyce, whose listed height was just 6-3, and UNC's 6-10 center Lee Dedmon. Amazingly, Joyce out-jumped Dedmon and tipped the ball directly to Owens under the basket for a layup and 52-51 Gamecock victory and ACC title, which advanced the team to the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecock roster for the 1970-71 campaign included head coach Frank McGuire, assistant coaches Buck Freeman, Bill Loving and Donnie Walsh, and student-athletes John Roche, Dennis Powell, Casey Manning, Bob Carver, Kevin Joyce, Tom Owens, Danny Traylor, Tom Riker, John Ribock, Rick Aydlett, Jimmy Powell and manager, John Morganelli.  Roche would lead the team in scoring with 21.6 points per game, and Owens added 15.0 points and 12.9 rebounds per outing.  The team concluded the season with a 23-6 overall record. Tip time for Saturday's contest versus Ole Miss is set for 6 p.m. ET, and the match-up versus the Rebels will be broadcast on the SEC Network with Mike Morgan (play-by-play) and Mark Wise (analyst) on the call.  Derek Scott (play-play) and Casey Manning (analyst), a sophomore on the 1971 ACC championship squad, and long-time radio analyst for Carolina basketball broadcasts, will have the call over the air for the Gamecock Radio Network.

I remember that team very well.  And I still remember some of the games.  I was thrilled to win the ACC and make the NCAAT.  Sadly, we lost in the first round.  Very disappointing.  IMO, that was the best team USC has ever had.  Notice that there were only 11 players.  I think you were allowed 15 on scholarship in those days.

As for the game with Ole Miss, we can win it if we make as many or more FT than OM does, if we get more rebounds than them, and turn it over less than them.   We won't win if we let them beat us with FT, like we did with Bama.  Our guys should attack the paint and try to get  fouled instead of trying to get open for threes.    Very simply, we cannot get outscored on FT and expect to win.

We need to run when we can, but run just a bit slower.  I think we get too fast at times and that leads to turnovers.   Be quick, but don't hurry, as John Wooden put it.   We have to attack the paint.  We don't have enough good shooters to be a team that shoots a lot of threes.   Our percentages prove that.  We have to attack the rim and either score in close or get fouled.   Getting fouled and making two FT is much more damaging to the opponent than just a FG is.    We have to make OM take jump shots.  And then we must rebound their misses.   We will  lose this game if we get outscored on FT by more than a couple.  If you look at the box scores of the games we lose, we always seem to get outscored on FT.  So we MUST correct that.

I’ve been banging on Leveque much of this season, but he came to play tonight.  I hope he can sustain the offensive/defensive efforts.  We need that presence down low something  fierce.

We're getting beat in every way possible.  I  think we are the worst team in the SEC.  I wish that the season had been cancelled.      Nice bunch of kids who can't play basketball.   They all should be doing something else.   And the coaches should be employed elsewhere.

So when we win this game, will you be saying the same thing?  Sheesh...

Statistically, this game is exactly even, with two exceptions... Ole Miss hit three more FGs than we did (we were 10-27, they were 13-27),  and they went to the FT line 4 more times than we did (they were 8-10, we were 5-6).

What this means...The game felt much worse than it actually was in the first half.

Don’t k ow about how it feels but I know how it looks.  We take bad shots and turn the ball over a ton.

Unfortunate choice for the player picture for tonight's game. Couisnard had been playing poorly anyway so I do not think his injury is going to hurt that much. He had 28 points in last year's game, so you can see how bad his shooting woes have been.

We showed a little fight at the end but we let Shuler get a career high. Too little, too late. Frank needs to open up the competition again and see who shows some fight.

I want to see more Hannibal, start Bryant. And Leveque is playing better. Add in Lawson and Minaya and call it a starting five.
Trade Woods and Minaya’s names, and I endorse that starting lineup.

Woods and Minaya should play  a bit less.  Starters should be Hannibal, Lawson, Bryant, Leveque and McCreary.       I wouldn't play Moss  unless there was no one else.

Agree Bryant should start and McCreary is looking better.   Lawson is obviously a starter but it really doesn’t matter about the rest of the lineup.   Just don’t have the players to compete.

Minaya is struggling with his shot but he does a lot of other things to help. Woods had a nice run of three games but reverted back to his earlier form tonight.

Woods went head to head against Shuler - Woods was the better player in HS, but we lost the game tonight just because of that disparit in their match-up.

Plus, we need a back-up PG - if we play both PGs together, we have no back-up.
IDK about the Woods/Shuler “head to head”. Woods got saddled with two fouls that were inexplicable - one in each half.  Replay shows they weren’t good calls.  That meant he was coming off of the bench most of the game.  Can’t have a consistent game with no time on the floor.

As to the Minaya thing... he had proved he’s much more valuable this year in the 6th man spot.  He’s not providing any consistent offense, but he IS giving us the D and rebounding.  If I’m coaching, I rotate him quite a bit, trading offense and defense.  He gives good minutes if he’s just a defensive stopper. He hurts us badly with poorly chosen offensive shooting.
