*** Legends Weekend: USC (3-6/5-8) vs. Ole Miss (6-6/11-8) Game Thread ***

It appears that Frank does not know what to do to fix the problems on this team.    Frank isn't stupid, so if he knew what to do, he would do it.   So, I think the problem is really that our guys are not good enough to compete in the SEC.   Which goes back to Frank's inability to recruit players who are good enough.   I doubt John Wooden could win with this team.

OM outscored us on FT 34 - 22.   We lost the game by 7.   As long as we continue to be outscored on FT, we will continue to lose.

I seriously considered going to the game, but my usual GCC member source for BB tickets didn't buy any this season.

The Ticketmaster stuff didn't work, either.

I guess the school's just mailing it in this year.

Frink would have been our Kotsar this year, but he's gone for the season.

Frank's had a knee replacement in the off-season, then the guys got the 'rona, no fans at the home games to pump the team up like it's been in the past.

I think we have the talent on the team, but talent is as execution does.

Gotta hit the reset button at the end of the season, I guess.  I still say we keep Frank because there are less moving parts to basketball than football and the 'rona is more problematic because of that.

People can talk about great defense all they want but basketball is about scoring.  Even the announcers were saying last night that at some point you have to be able to put the ball in the basket.  We only have 2 scorers and that's Lawson and Bryant.  I say that as someone that has been a Frank Martin supporter since the day it was announced that he was coming here.

I would be OK with him coming back next year (assuming his health is OK, not sure something isn't going on) but something's got to change, what we're doing isn't working.

I've been vocal about my dissatisfaction with this team, but I think I'm beginning to understand better why we are struggling:  1.  No Alanzo Frink.  He is our best post player.  And our most experienced.   If we had him playing, it would enable us to play two  bigs at times because we'd have the depth to do that.   Him not being available has hurt us a lot.   2.  Shooting slumps by Minaya and Couisnard.   It makes it hard to win when two guys who play as much as they do can't make shots.  3.  Point guard struggles.   Our PG play has not been as good as we need.   But, playing Hannibal there more might help.   Hannibal can penetrate off the dribble and make FT.   4.  Covid.   Hate to go back to that, but it has had a negative effect on the team.    I think the first two reasons are the most important.   And I don't know what  Frank can do about either one.

Post play was always going to be a struggle without Kotsar - he was under-rated and did so many things well. Perhaps his best skill was his ability to pass and set screens to make our offense run more smoothly.

One positive to Kotsar graduating and Frink being out is that Leveque is starting to develop with the added minutes, especially on the offensive end. We will have Leveque, Frink plus our two Freshman bigs for depth. I like the upside for McCreary also - but he is better suited for PF, not the post.

One overlooked secret to our past success - and our current lack of success - has been the Pro-Am tournament that is run every year in Columbia. That helps to keep the players in game shape during the offseason and gives the players added experience in game situations as well. So we not only missed out on preseason practices and early OOC games, but the offseason practices and games that come from that tournament.

And as noted elsewhere, Frank is not going to bend the rules on Covid. Other coaches might do additional tests until one comes back negative, or just lie altogether so his team can play. Not Frank.
I miss Kotsar.  Really good big man, though not a back to the basket guy.  But he was excellent defensively, though not a shot blocker.  Losing him and Frink I think has hurt us more than I first realized.   Leveque and McCreary are gaining valuable experience, but we really miss having Frink in there.  Minaya hustles, but we need more size in the post.  If there is to be anything to look forward to this season, Minaya and Couisnard have to come out of their shooting slumps.  We probably need 25 points or so between those two in order to win games.  If they keep missing shots, its going to be tough  to win.
