Richland Northeast’s T.J. Brunson announced Monday he has decommitted from Louisville.

The senior linebacker had been committed to Louisville since July. He took his official visit to Louisville on Dec. 5.

“After much and prayer I would like to announce my decommitment from the University of Louisville,” Brunson tweeted. “I would like to thank the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play at a great school.”

Brunson’s decommitment opens up the chances he might land at South Carolina. Brunson was the first person new Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp visited after he was introduced as the Gamecocks new coach.

That move definitely didn’t go unnoticed by Brunson.

“It was a big deal for him to come by after his press conference,” Brunson said last week during practice for the 79th annual Shrine Bowl. “It makes a difference, like I’m a priority. It definitely makes a difference in their chances to get me.”

Brunson went on an unofficial visit to USC earlier this month and will make his official visit there Jan. 15. He also was offered by Purdue this month but wasn’t sure if he will visit there.

Brunson was named the Defensive MVP for the South Carolina squad in Saturday’s Shrine Bowl. He registered a game-high 13 tackles, one sack and 1.5 for loss.

“Right now, I’m finished with the Shrine Bowl so now I will focus on my recruiting,” Brunson said following the game. “I’m trying to feel where I am at home and where I can make a difference in the program. That is my main focus.”

Brunson, the 19th-ranked prospect in the state by 247Sports, had a team-leading 138 tackles in helping RNE to its first playoff appearance since 2011 and first playoff victory since moving down to Class 3A. He also was the team’s punter and averaged nearly 40 yards a kick.
