The roster
At South Carolina, there’s one traditional defensive end. On the other side, usually, is a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker, which is a very different position. This review of defensive ends doesn’t focus on the “Bucks,” such as current players D.J. Wonnum and Brad Johnson.
All of the defensive ends on the Gamecocks roster are on schedule to return in 2018.
The names to know
According to the 247Sports offer list, South Carolina has tendered 11 strongside defensive ends, including Savion Jackson, Zacch Pickens, Joseph Anderson and Latrell Jean.
Jackson, a 4-star prospect from Clayton (N.C.) High School, is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 52 overall prospect in the Class of 2019. The No. 5 recruit at the position was first offered by South Carolina in February while he was on campus for a junior day.
The 6-foot-2, 245-pound prospect has since added offers from Duke, Florida, Louisville, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
Pickens is listed a few spots behind Jackson at No. 59 overall. The No. 7 strongside defensive end is the top-rated prospect from South Carolina’s 2019 class.
A 4-star recruit from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C., Pickens (6-3, 244) has offers from Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan and Tennessee, among a few other Power 5 programs.
Anderson, a 4-star talent from Siegel High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn., is the No. 93 overall prospect in the country. He’s one spot behind Pickens in the strongside defensive end rankings.
A teammate of South Carolina commitment Maxwell Iyama, Anderson (6-4, 264) has yet to visit South Carolina, so he might be a long shot at this point. The No. 1 overall prospect from Tennessee has offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and Tennessee, among others.
South Carolina and Syracuse have offered Jean, a 4-star recruit from Lakeland (Fla.) High School. The 6-2, 235-pound prospect visited the Gamecocks in July.
