Looking ahead to linebacker targets

October 25, 2017

There are only a few positions remaining with multiple spots open for South Carolina’s 2018 recruiting efforts. Linebacker is one of them.

Three-star prospect Ernest Jones IV (Waycross, Ga.) has been committed to the Gamecocks since May 5, the birthday of linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler. Jones opted for South Carolina over offers from Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech and Kentucky.

Jones is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 54 outside linebacker in the Class of 2018.

Four-star linebackers Channing Tindall and Dax Hollifield, both of whom are set to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, are among the top targets left for the Gamecocks.

Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) is the No. 5 outside linebacker in the country and the No. 2 overall prospect from South Carolina. Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) is the nation’s No. 5 inside linebacker and the No. 5 overall prospect from the South Carolina.

Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Florida State are also in the mix for Tindall. Hollifield’s lead group includes Florida State, North Carolina, Stanford and Virginia Tech.

The Gamecocks were on track to lose two linebackers before the start of the season: Bryson Allen-Williams and Skai Moore. But Allen-Williams will redshirt and return in 2018 now that he’s undergone season-ending shoulder surgery.

Allen-Williams and Eldridge Thompson will be the team’s only seniors at the position in 2018. With that in mind, South Carolina is projected to sign at least two linebackers in 2019.

South Carolina recruiting targets

Ahdarrious Gee, a 3-star linebacker from Crisp County (Ga.) High School, was the first 2019 prospect to jump on board with the Gamecocks’ 2019 class. Mississippi State, North Carolina State and Kentucky also offered.

South Carolina has offered several 2019 prospects, but only a handful of them are linebackers: Mikel Jones (Hialeah, Fla.), Anthony Solomon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Kalen DeLoach (Savannah, Ga.).

With linebacker spots available in the 2018 class, the Gamecocks’ focus is likely on that cycle. What’s done in 2019 could be dictated by what happens with Tindall and Hollifield.
