The roster
If South Carolina’s defensive tackle attrition doesn’t extend beyond Ulric Jones and Taylor Stallworth, here’s what the returning roster will look like at the position in 2018:
Below are a few names to know for the 2019 recruiting cycle:
The Georgia pledge
Four-star Rashad Cheney made an early commitment to Georgia, but he’s visited South Carolina several times since. The Gamecocks are firmly in the mix. At this point, they’ve got the best shot at flipping Cheney, who’s now a student at Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Ga.
According to the 247Sports composite, Cheney (6-foot-3, 270 pounds) is ranked as the No. 11 defensive tackle in the Class of 2019. Nationally, he’s ranked as the No. 193 overall prospect.
Also in Georgia
Four-star Travon Walker is the top-rated defensive tackle in Georgia for the 2019 recruiting cycle. Walker is nationally ranked as the No. 5 prospect at the position. Among all prospects from the class, he’s No. 65 overall.
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound prospect Upson-Lee High School (Thomaston, Ga.) has offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Michigan, so South Carolina will have to knock off several notable programs to land him.
DeAngelo Griffin, a 6-foot-1, 295-pounder from Crisp County High School (Cordele, Ga.) doesn’t carry the same type of recruiting profile, but he’s good enough for the South Carolina staff. Their offer joined Arkansas and Wake Forest, his only other Power 5 tenders.
The Carolinas
South Carolina has sent out a few offers to several 2019 prospects from North Carolina, including C.J. Clark and Jaylen Nichols.
Clark, a 4-star from New London-North Stanley, is ranked as the No. 19 defensive tackle in the country. Charlotte, East Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest have offered. Clark (6-3, 303) landed his offer from the Gamecocks in June, after a strong showing at camp.
Nichols, a 3-star from Charlotte-Myers Park, is ranked as the No. 37 defensive tackle in the country. South Carolina is his only offer.
Tysheik Galloway hasn’t been offered by the Gamecocks, but he’s staked an early claim to the top defensive tackle in South Carolina’s Class of 2019. The 6-foot-2, 280-pound prospect attends Belton-Honea Path High School.
