Luke Doty sees Gamecocks, hits the road for more visits

Along for the ride
Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School quarterback Luke Doty was joined by his mother when he visited South Carolina on Thursday for Day 3 of Muschamp Camp.
“That was her first time really seeing everything South Carolina has to offer,” Doty said. “She went up with us to a game this past fall, but she never got to see any of the new facilities, the campus and stuff like that. So while I was working out, she took a tour of everything, really got to see what all South Carolina has to offer and I think she was really impressed.”
Doty, a 3-star in the Class of 2020, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the country.
On Sunday, Doty camped at North Carolina. He’ll attend Clemson’s camp on Wednesday before returning to South Carolina for a 7-on-7 tournament on Thursday. Auburn will have him in over the weekend to round out his summer recruiting stops.
Still the guy
Doty (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) told SEC Country this spring that South Carolina’s coaches have targeted him as their top quarterback for the Class of 2020. Gamecocks coaches had the same message for him last week.
“They just kept reiterating to me that I’m their guy and I’m No. 1 on their board right now, as far as 2020 goes. They really want me at South Carolina,” Doty said.
He added, “That means a lot. It being an in-state school, an SEC powerhouse, that definitely means a lot to me and my family. It would be great to represent my home state, playing for them.”
South Carolina received a selection on the 247Sports Crystal Ball in early June. North Carolina picked one up last summer. If Clemson offers on Wednesday, that likely would shake things up on the Crystal Ball.
Lots of attention
Because South Carolina has made Doty such a priority, first-year quarterbacks coach Dan Werner was sure to have plenty of face time with him and his mother on Thursday. Coach Will Muschamp was, too.
“It was really fun. It was really good. The coaching environment and everybody there was amazing,” Doty said. “Coach Werner was great. I spent most of my time with him. We started the camp and did a couple of drills. He kind of followed me around throughout the whole thing, then we ate lunch and went into position stuff.
“It was really good to get some coaching from him and just see how he does things, as far as a practice environment goes. It was really fun.”
Doty is ranked No. 6 among prospects from the state.
