Will Muschamp and the South Carolina coaching staff continue to mine the JUCO ranks for prospects who are ready to make an immediate impact.
Damien Lewis, a 6-foot-3, 325-pound offensive guard from Northwest Mississippi Community College, is among those who have been targeted by the Gamecocks. The rising sophomore, who is from Canton, Miss., made the trek to Columbia this past weekend for an official visit.
“I liked the players they have, the coaches and the facility and the weight room, the way they handle it,” Lewis said.
Senior offensive lineman D.J. Park served as the player host for Lewis, who was impressed with what he saw around town.
“The weight room, they’ve got a big weight, and the stadium,” Lewis said. “They dorm rooms are real [nice] and the school’s in the city.”
Offensive line coach Eric Wolford also made a strong impression.
“Coach, that’s the man. He’s the real deal. He’s going to be straight with you on everything. He’s going to tell you the truth,” Lewis said. “He’s going to look you in the eye and you can see he ain’t lying. He’s a real cool guy. He looks like he knows what he’s talking about.”
The weekend presented Lewis with his first opportunity to meet Muschamp.
“He’s real cool, personable. We just sat around and ate dinner with him and we just got to talk about some things,” Lewis said. “I like coach. He handles his business.”
Up this week for Lewis are unofficial visits to Ole Miss and Memphis. He’ll get back out for more official visits in two weeks to West Virginia and Utah.
Lewis, a second-team NJCAA All-American, will consider a couple of factors as he makes his decision, which won’t be revealed until after the season.
“Does my family like it? See what feels like home for me, what’s best for me,” he said.
