There wasn’t a whole lot out there to indicate that Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College 5 star defensive end Marquavius Lewis 6'4" 271lbs was truly interested in Miami.

They may seem like somewhat of newcomer in Lewis’  recruitment but he told InsideTheU.com that’s not really an accurate depiction.

“I was actually always a Miami fan so I took them pretty seriously,” Lewis said. “They didn’t come too late in my recruitment, it was at a good time. It started out with mostly just SEC schools and they were there right after that.”

That was before Lewis took his official visit to Coral Gables. He was in town from Monday through Wednesday before heading back to Kansas.

“Being my favorite school growing up, I had an amazing opportunity to get down there,” Lewis said. “I look at them as a place I’m very interested in and I wanted to experience that. It was nice that Claude (George) was going too but I didn’t visit just for that, I was going anyway.”

Jethro Franklin would be Lewis’ position coach if he were to end up a Hurricane. During his time on campus, the staff figured he might relate better with someone younger

“I was amazed with the football side and how I would fit in their scheme,” Lewis said. “They want me as somebody who can rush and Coach (Kareem) Brown was straight forward about that. He told me about the basics of college life at a place such as Miami. I would be well taken care of being far away from home.”

Lewis will graduate in December and he enjoyed Miami’s academic presentation. It gave him a totally different view of the place aside from football.

“It’s a private school so they’re one of the top educational institutions in the country right now,” Lewis said. “I learned a lot about the business management program and some of it surprised me. They have a lot of international students coming from all these foreign countries. Their families back home have so much money from the businesses they run.”

Lewis has eighteen BCS offers but Miami has moved into his top five accompanied by some other heavy hitters. Arizona State received his first official visit three weeks ago.

“There’s no order to my schools but the five are South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Miami, and Arizona State,” Lewis said. “I’m thinking about taking the rest of my officials in the summer. Then I’ll be ready for a decision around the beginning of the season or maybe a little more towards the middle.”

Lewis finished his initial season of junior college ball with 61 tackles, 19 for loss, and 7.5 sacks. He had previously redshirted so he’ll enter with two years to play two seasons
