Plans to visit one SEC school this weekend turned into plans to see another instead for DE MJ Webb 6'4" 260lbs.

So it will be a Saturday visit to South Carolina and not Auburn for the Madison (Ga.) Morgan County defensive end as he comes to Columbia for a cookout with a limited guest list. And it’s the relationship he has with the Gamecocks coaches bringing him back to town, as well as looking to follow through on his word, he said.

“Coach (Will) Muschamp, when I went over there last month, they already had talked me into coming back again,” Webb said. “I had given them my word that I would come over again, so I’m doing that.”

The 6-foot-3, 271-pound Webb – who has more than 20 offers, including South Carolina, Georgia and Auburn – said his interest in the Gamecocks has continued to grow since Muschamp was hired as the head coach. South Carolina really entered the picture at that time for the services of the nation’s No. 8 strong-side defensive end in the Class of 2017.

“Earlier in my recruitment, South Carolina wasn’t even on my board,” Webb said. “Then when Coach Muschamp and half of Auburn’s staff moved over to South Carolina, they recruited me hard at Auburn and it translated to South Carolina. They didn’t slow down or anything with the recruitment. Being that they were recruiting me for South Carolina and being only two hours away from my home, it’s really close.”

Webb plans to make a decision in late October following some official visits. He already has one set up for South Carolina. He will visit Columbia again Oct. 8 when Georgia comes to town.

While the decision is months away and he does not claim a list of top schools at this time, Webb did say South Carolina will be in it once it is time to choose.

“Just knowing that Coach Muschamp is a defensive-minded head coach, that really says a lot,” he said. “I would play under offensive-minded head coaches, but being that he is a defensive-minded coach, it shows that he will put more emphasis on the defensive side of the ball. I’m really happy about that.”

When it comes to Saturday, he is just happy to be part of a smaller pool of invite-only visitors for what he anticipates being a laid-back day.

“It shows me that I’m one of their top priorities and everything,” Webb said. “I’m really blessed that they invited me to it. I know I’m going to have a good time being with the coaches and players and everything, so I’m really looking forward to that.”
