Muschamp checks in on top 2018 target Xavier Thomas
Dec. 03, 2016
National Signing Day for the 2017 class is less than two months away, but South Carolina coaches continue to plant seeds for future recruiting classes.
That was the case on Friday as South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson stopped by Wilson High in Florence, the home (for now) of Class of 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas.
Thomas, the top prospect in South Carolina for 2018, announced Monday night he will be playing his final year of high school at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He confirmed the two USC coaches were by the school Friday.
Coaches are limited by NCAA rules in how much interaction they can have with junior prospects while at their high schools. Muschamp and Thompson spent time talking Friday with Wilson football coach Thomas Balkcom.
Thomas is one of the most sought-after recruits in the country, and both South Carolina Clemson are in the mix for him along with Alabama, Georgia, Florida State and Ohio State. He has admitted to growing up a fan of the Gamecocks.
“Me switching schools will NOT affect my college decision at all,” he tweeted earlier this week.
Thomas is expected to enroll at IMG in January. He had 131 tackles and seven sacks this year for Wilson, which lost to Chapin in the first round of the playoffs.
Muschamp even stopped at Florence barbecue restaurant Wholly Smokin’ for lunch.
