Just a day shy of one month, there is a substantial update on redshirt freshman Shameik Blackshear. Head coach Will Muschamp, meeting with the media at halftime of the men’s basketball game, said he believes Blackshear will be able to play football again and he will not face any disciplinary action from the football program.

Muschamp said Blackshear has come by the office for a meeting.

“They believe so,” Muschamp said, when asked if Blackshear will play football game. But again, let’s just worry about the young man’s heal that this time.”

Blackshear was shot on Dec. 16, once in the upper body and once in the lower body. He was still in the hospital but expected to be released soon, according to Muschamp on January 4.

“Shameik was a victim, as far as I’m concerned,” Muschamp said. “That’s the information I have. They believe so.”

Blackshear, a former four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite, played in two games for South Carolina during his freshman season and recorded two tackles. The Bluffton native was the second-highest ranked recruit in the Gamecocks’ 2015 class.

Blackshear is one of five defensive ends, including early enrollee Keir Thomas, on the spring football roster. Thomas is listed as an outside linebacker on South Carolina’s official roster.
