News and notes from another major Gamecocks weekend

March 04, 2018

Returns from the latest South Carolina recruiting weekend have made their way to SEC Country and there’s plenty to share after another big Saturday in Columbia.

Four-star cornerback Sheridan Jones, the No. 15 cornerback in the Class of 2019, was down from Norfolk, Va.

“The visit went pretty good,” he said. “I got to watch the practice and get a good talk in with coach [Travaris Robinson] and Muschamp.”

What was their message?

“About how they are definitely an up and coming team and that they have all the tools,” Jones said. “Now they just need the guys and I was definitely one that could be a game-changer.

“Also that they are great academically and do a lot for their players off the field.”

Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State have also offered.

South Carolina offered 2019 tight end KeShawn Toney on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect from Williston-Elko (S.C.) High School arrived to Columbia with offers from Charlotte, Georgia State and South Carolina State.

The Gamecocks also offered 2019 wide receiver Torezz Alexander, who’s from Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Ga.

Among the other confirmed guests who made it in:

  • 2019 4-star athlete Jammie Robinson (Cordele, Ga.), 2019 4-star defensive end Savion Jackson (Clayton, N.C.), 2019 4-star wide receiver Zion Puckett (Griffin, Ga.)
  • Several 2019 kickers and punters visited this weekend, several of whom stopped by on Friday, including Ryan Coe (McDonald, Pa.), Daniel Obarski (Chandler, Ariz.), Anthony Rodriguez (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Aidan Swanson (IMG Academy). Ryan Fitzgerald (Colquitt, Ga.) and Patrick Nations (Walhalla, S.C.) stopped by Saturday.

Special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler told Nations the Gamecocks are still deciding if they’re  going to sign a specialist to a scholarship with the class.

“He said that it’s coming down to numbers,” Nations said, “With whether or not they’re giving a specialist the full ride, like giving them an offer or if it’s a preferred walk-on, so it’s still coming down to numbers with that.”

Nations will return later this month for the Garnet & Black spring game.
