November to-do list for Will Muschamp’s Gamecocks
November 02, 2017
The South Carolina recruiting train is still sitting at the station, because the Gamecocks haven’t added a 2018 commitment since August.
It certainly was a big one: 4-star wide receiver Josh Vann. But it’s time to get the ball rolling once again for the upcoming recruiting cycle, though it wasn’t an item on South Carolina’s to-do list last month.
So, how did Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks do last month?
Breaking: Fans are getting antsy.
We’re approaching three months on the 2018 commitment drought. While it’s easy to see why Gamecocks fans want Muschamp to toss another #SpursUp on Twitter, they should keep one thing in mind: It’s been awhile since a South Carolina target committed to another school.
That certainly could change if Tindall opts to commit to Georgia over South Carolina this month. At this point, he appears to be the next 2018 target to announce a commitment and the race appears to be one that’s between the Gamecocks and Dawgs.
2. Spatula’s out
Muschamp still needs pass rushers. Gerald and Jackson would provide that trait to South Carolina’s 2018 class.
Can the Gamecocks convince one or both to flip while visiting Columbia this month? At the very least, they can help grease the pan.
3. Upset somebody
South Carolina’s first shot is this Saturday in Athens. Georgia is No. 1 in the initial College Football Playoff ranking. The Gamecocks are more than a three-touchdown underdog. A win would be massive.
It’s sort of the same story with the final game of the season.
Clemson is No. 4 in the CFP ranking. As long as the Tigers don’t fall in Raleigh this weekend, they’re only going to climb this month.
Wins against those two teams won’t necessarily sway any specific recruit in South Carolina’s direction, but it would prove to everyone in the college football world that Muschamp’s Gamecocks are for real.

- Official visit weekend: South Carolina had its first major official visit weekend of the season for the Arkansas game, hosting 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield and 3-star safety Israel Mukuamu, who’s committed to Florida State. It was another big weekend when Vanderbilt came to town, because Florida cornerback commitment Divaad Wilson and Florida State cornerback commitment Asante Samuel Jr. both visited. Four-star linebacker Channing Tindall and 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge were in as unofficial guests.
- Beat Tennessee: It wasn’t easy on the eyes, but South Carolina knocked off Tennessee on Rocky Top, which helped turn up the heat on the seat of coach Butch Jones. If Jones loses his job, that opens the door for 3-star defensive end Dorian Gerald, who was an unofficial guest for the Arkansas game, and 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn, who took an unofficial for the Vanderbilt game.
- Schedule more official visits: Five-star defensive end K.J. Henry is set to visit for the Florida game next weekend. Three-star defensive end Jarrett Jackson, a Louisville commitment, will also be on campus for an official visit. Gerald is scheduled to be in for the Wofford game.
