One of the top defensive ends in the country is a big fan of Will Muschamp

February 25, 2018

Defensive end Jacolbe Cowan has accumulated more than two dozen offers, including ones from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

The class of 2020 prospect is not yet ready to begin naming favorites, but he does like what he has seen from South Carolina.

The Charlotte native attended a Gamecocks football game in November and also went to USC’s junior day last month.

“It was good,” Cowan said of his junior day visit. “I finally got to get up to a Gamecock basketball game and spend more time with the coaches than I usually would on a game day atmosphere, so that was good.”

Cowan is being recruited by area recruiter Bobby Bentley, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp.

Cowan went on to say that he is a big fan of Thompson and Muschamp and talks with both coaches regularly.

“With coach Muschamp, he’s a real good coach, a great coach, actually … South Carolina’s real cool,” Cowan said. “Lance Thompson, the defensive line coach, we have a great relationship. We talk all the time, not just about football, but about things outside the field, academics, family, things like that. He’s a really great coach.”

The Providence Day star is rated as a four-star prospect with a ranking of 95 by 247Sports. He is currently rated as the top player in North Carolina, the No. 2 strong-side defensive end in the country and the No. 7 overall player in the nation for the class of 2020.

South Carolina is selling Cowan on being able to come in and be a perfect fit for its program.

“They just feel like I can fit the program well, especially the defense that they run,” Cowan said. “Coach Muschamp’s a defensive-minded coach, so he just feels like I would perform well there and get my degree and things like that.”

Cowan also has a friend who will soon be playing for the Gamecocks in class of 2018 defensive tackle signee Rick Sandidge.

“Me and him are from the same hometown. I have a good relationship with him,” he said.
