Decision day looming
Three-star offensive guard Warren Ericson (6-foot-4, 290 pounds) is approaching a decision. Though Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina were previously touted as a potential lead group, he wants to keep an “open mind with everything.”
Ericson, a 2018 prospect from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Ga., is looking to make an announcement in late June. Several factors will be considered.
“I think the group of people that are already there, as far as position-wise and things like that,” he said. “Obviously, a great coach that has experience in putting players in the NFL and just great traditions, a winning tradition, the school tradition.”
South Carolina offensive line coach Eric Wolford certainly has a favorable track record.
“I love his honesty that he always has with me and where he sees me,” Ericson said. “I mean, I don’t [think] like, whenever I talk to him on the phone, is this true or not? I really like that about him. He, obviously, has experience, because he coached in the NFL and he knows what it takes to get there. That’s comforting.
“I really like the way he teaches. I got the chance to go see a couple of spring practices, so the way he runs his drills, I could definitely see myself there.”
Wolford isn’t the only factor that has the Gamecocks in strong position. Ericson’s older brother plays on the soccer team, so he’s more than familiar with the campus.
Plus, Coach Muschamp is “taking the program in the right direction.”
Ericson added, “It’s close to home. It’s one of those schools that’s far enough away, but it’s close enough if you have to come back, you can still make a day trip and come back. They’re adding on new things, the new [football ops] facility. The eye candy, that’s always good to have, too.”
Wednesday movement
South Carolina took one step forward and one step back on Wednesday. Such is life in the world of recruiting.
Four-star cornerback Jayce Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.) now lists South Carolina as his leader. He told SEC Country reporter Chris Kirschner that Alabama, his previous leader, “just fell off with the relationship.”
“They are making other corners in the state more of a priority than me,” Horn said. “I know that I’m South Carolina’s No. 1 guy.”
Horn (6-0, 174) visited Tuscaloosa earlier this spring and left town with the Tide up top. They clung to that position after his trip to Columbia the following weekend.
As long as Tennessee is still a factor, it may not be the wisest move to go ahead and call this a win for South Carolina, but it certainly helps that things are trending in this direction.
Remember, his close friend, 2018 wide receiver Jatavious Harris, is committed to the Vols, so don’t be surprised if there’s another plot twist in store.
The step back for the Gamecocks came in the form of an announcement by the father of 3-star running back Master Teague III. South Carolina was eliminated from contention, leaving Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee as his finalists. Of late, the Dawgs are the trending favorite.
Because nearly 10 months have passed since his previous visit to South Carolina, it’s no surprise that Teague will not end up as the Gamecocks’ No. 2 running back commitment in 2018.
All-name offer
Three-star (247Sports) running back Steele Chambers is a first-team all-name candidate for the 2019 recruiting cycle. On Wednesday, the 6-2, 215-pound running back landed an offer from South Carolina.
Chambers, who attends Blessed Trinity Catholic in Roswell, Ga., also lists offers from Michigan, North Carolina and Tennessee, among several others.
