Potential flip list continues to grow

October 25, 2017

Arthur Williams asks … “Saw that Asante Samuel Jr. is visiting the Gamecocks officially. Possible flip?”

Jacob Blanton asks … “To expand on that question, which prospects, if any, are looking more favorable in a flip situation?”

Those types of questions are always popular this time of year. I’m not sure if it’s ratcheted up more this year because of the signing period in December or because we’re starting to see Will Muschamp and his staff starting to assert itself on the recruiting trail.

It could be a combination of the two. Or just the latter.

South Carolina’s 5-2 start provides enough tangible evidence that things are headed in the right direction. A strong finish will certainly help drive that home.

It also helps to have guys experiencing success under Muschamp and his staff. Chris Lammons is an example, one of many. That’s probably helping the Gamecocks with Samuel, who’s friends with the senior defensive back from Lauderhill, Fla.

South Carolina defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson is originally from Miami, so Lammons isn’t the only Gamecock that shares a South Florida connection with Samuel.

We’ll have to wait and see how much those connections can pay off, in the long-run.

There are a handful of other players we’re monitoring as potential flips. To this point, these are the primary names to keep in mind:

Florida

  • 3-star CB Divaad Wilson
Suddenly, this weekend’s game against Vanderbilt is shaping up to be a big recruiting weekend, because Wilson and Samuel will be in as official visitors.

Tennessee

  • 4-star CB Jaycee Horn
  • 3-star DE Dorian Gerald
Obviously, the future of coach Butch Jones and his staff at Tennessee will play a big part in what happens with these guys and their respective futures. Both have visited South Carolina this season and Gerald has arranged an official visit for next month.

Florida State

  • 4-star CB Asante Samuel
  • 3-star S Israel Mukuamu
After the Seminoles snatched 4-star safety Hamsah Nasirildeen from the Gamecocks in 2017, flipping one or two of their guys in 2018 would be a nice form of payback. Mukuamu has already taken an official to Columbia, but he’s probably a long shot.

Louisville

  • 3-star DE Jarrett Jackson
Also scheduled for an official visit next month, Jackson is a personal favorite. His senior highlights are a lot of fun to watch.
